Why Choose Dishwasher Drawers?

Dishwashers are some of the most integral appliances in the kitchen, and it’s important to look at all of your options when you’re choosing one. These days, there are more choices than ever: opt for a model with adjustable racks, a third rack, or dual washing arms. Alternatively, go a completely different direction with the unique dishwasher drawer. Brought to the market by Fisher & Paykel (who still dominate the market), the design is immediately iconic and set apart from other models. With a width that’s 24 or 36 inches wide, they take up the same amount of space a normal appliance would. These “dishdrawers” slide out from the countertop for an extremely easy loading and unloading process. If you’re buying a new appliance, look into why these dishwasher drawers make life easier below.

The Pros: Unbeatable Flexibility

Dishwasher drawers are an innovative solution to common problems you might not even know a regular appliance faces. For one, they’re incredibly flexible. Whether you get a stacked pair the size of a classic model (a very popular option) or choose to get a single drawer, you can run smaller loads than a traditional model can. That’s perfect for days when you’ve bought carry-out, only need to wash glassware or simply don’t need to wash much. The result is that you end up using less water for smaller loads for a more eco-friendly household.

If you have two dishwasher drawers from Fisher & Paykel, you can run different cycles in each, too. Maybe you have pots and pans that need scrubbing in one compartment, and glassware that should shine after a cycle in another. You have the flexibility to manage both at once here.

When it comes to structure and style, you can choose as many drawers as you want, or have space for. Install a single in your island, and a stacked pair beside your sink. If you live in a smaller apartment, perhaps a single appliance beside your range is the right move instead. That way, you have extra room to store pantry essentials beneath.

Many feel that it’s much easier to load and unload these Fisher & Paykel models than a traditional dishwasher, too. That makes them a great choice for those with disabilities, back pain or those who are older: there’s less need to move and bend over when the drawer will just roll out on its own.

The Main Con: Interrupted Space

There’s lots to love about dish drawers, but one aspect many critics can point out is their divided space. If you have a pair of dish drawers, there’s little room for something like, say, a massive platter used to serve over a dozen people at the annual holiday dinner. That’s because the vertical space is rarely taller than 17 inches. Keep in mind that’s one small detractor among several great aspects.

Our Take

We think dishwasher drawers are a great revision on the classic appliance, and are perfect for those looking for a solution to some of the problems mentioned above. If you have trouble bending over to unload dishes, would rather run two specialized loads at once, and are looking for a more flexible appliance all around, this is definitely the appliance for you. But if you often find yourself washing loads with extra-large platters that might not fit, then these may not be the right appliances for you.
