The new Apple iPhone X is Here

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017

Rumors of the coming iPhone X suggested some very notable changes, from screen technology to sticker price. Now that the iPhone X (pronounced “ten”) has been announced, here’s a look at the big new features.

A Bezel-less Display

You can’t not instantly notice that, as Apple VP Philip Schiller said, “It is all screen.” The glass screen goes from edge to edge, seamlessly butting up against the surgical stainless steel sides of the phone. And that screen is dubbed the Super Retina Display. It’s a 2436 x 1125 display with 458 ppi, giving it the highest pixel density ever used in an iPhone. More importantly, that display is an OLED, which means that contrast, color accuracy and color gamut will be greater than ever before. It also gives the iPhone X support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. Because OLED displays use less energy than an LED screen and can be built thinner, the iPhone X can be crafted lighter and will sport a longer-lasting battery. The iPhone X is also rated IP67 for water and dust-resistance, and will be available in either Space Gray or Silver. (more…)

The New Apple Watch Series 3: Cellular Built-In

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017

The Apple Watch Series 3 is a game-changer

After a brief description of some of the features coming to watchOS, including some improved heart-monitoring functionality, Apple COO Jeff Williams made the first major announcement of the Apple Special Event. The new Apple Watch Series 3 was unveiled, and it was a big way to start the event: packed into the wrist-worn device is full cellular LTE functionality. That means that you can now perform most of the functions that your iPhone was handling (with the Apple Watch 1 or 2 simply mirroring and controlling those phone functions on its own screen), directly on the Apple Watch 3 itself. So you can make phone calls, video chat, or even stream music directly through the just the Apple Watch.

Meet the Samsung Frame

Wednesday, July 12th, 2017

Announced earlier this year, the curious new Samsung Frame is now available at Abt. Part piece of art and part high-tech display, the Samsung Frame is a product intended for those who find that the traditional “black mirror” of a TV is a bit of an eyesore in an otherwise nicely-decorated home. TVs have gotten better looking as technology allows them to be made thinner, with smaller bezels, and out of materials like sleek aluminum or stainless steel. But at the end of the day, they’re still big chunks of glass, plastic and metal that tend to look out of place in most design schemes when they’re powered off. The aim of the Frame is to allow the TV to function as beautiful piece of art when it’s not being used as a television.

8 Tips to Organize Your Door-in-Door Refrigerator

Friday, July 7th, 2017

If your door-in-door refrigerator could talk, what would it say? Would it complain about the various expired condiments hanging out on the top shelf? Maybe it would tell the tale of that green pepper that has been living in your veggie drawer for months. The truth of the matter is that most people struggle to keep their fridges organized. For some reason, it’s easier to throw food inside, shut the door, and forget about it. With the door-in-door feature on your fridge, though, you could be using that space to your advantage. Here are a few tips and tricks to help your fridge stay organized—whether it’s a side-by-side, French door, or door-in-door model.

Canon 6D Mark II and Rebel SL2 DSLRs Announced

Saturday, July 1st, 2017

After much speculation and anticipation, Canon took the wraps off two new eagerly-awaited DSLRs this week. The Canon EOS 6D Mark II and Rebel SL2 bring significant updates to two of the most popular Canon DSLRs, and are likely to be among the hottest new cameras this year.

The 6D Mark II updates its predecessor on nearly every front, presenting a refined full-frame option aimed squarely at intermediate and professional users. A bump in resolution, to 26.2 megapixels, will provide more detail in photos, while an updated autofocus system—including the highly-regarded Dual Pixel phase-detect AF from the EOS 80D—will help users utilize that resolution to capture sharply-focused photos.
