PlayStation 5 Finally Revealed

The PlayStation 5 is here. Well, sort of. In today’s PS5 event, Sony gave the world its first official look at the upcoming next-generation video game console—and it was quite a look.

It’s safe to say that the PlayStation 5 looks like no other gaming console has before. After the reveal of the PS5’s white DualSense Controller earlier this year, it was clear that the brand was going in a different look with the visual design of the new console. Sony has dumped the angular, monolithic silhouette of the PlayStation 4 and the dark colorway that has graced their consoles since the second generation, and opted for an entirely new look. Today’s announcement took the wraps off of the upcoming console to reveal a flowing, mostly-white body, almost organic in form. Cool blue lights emanate from the interior, and the whole thing looks like it could have been a prop in the Star Wars sequels. Though we think it looks better standing up than on its side, the PS5 can be used in either orientation.

Today’s event also revealed planned PS5 accessories, like the dual controller charging station and Pulse 3D wireless headset, along with a look at a handful of headlining games, including ‘Horizon: Forbidden West,’ the sequel to the acclaimed action RPG ‘Horizon Zero Dawn.’ Specs have been out in the wild since an announcement a few months ago, but here’s a recap in case you missed them:

CPU: 8-core, 3.5 GHz chip based on AMD Zen 2 architecture

GPU: 10.3 teraflop AMD RDNA 2-based graphics

RAM: 16 GB GDDR6

Storage: 825GB SSD (all games will need to be installed to the SSD to ensure they perform as intended)

The PlayStation 5 will also support 8K graphics and 4K graphics at 120Hz, as well as 3D audio. Expect to see it on shelves by the “2020 holiday shopping season.” The only real mystery left? How much will it cost? That’s the one thing Sony’s staying quiet on. As soon as we know, we’ll update, but the safe bet is that you should expect to pay $500—if not a bit more.
