Easy-to-Make Dorm Room Recipes

Moving away to college can be a fun new adventure, but when your parents are no longer there to help provide meals, what’s a young adult to do? Many students, at first, resort to fast food or vending machine snacks, which can unfortunately break the bank and have negative health effects over time. On the other hand, student housing rarely provides cooking appliances in rooms, so how do you go about cooking in your dorm? There are plenty of compact dorm appliances you can add to even the smallest corners of your living space. And more than that, there are plenty of recipes and meals you can throw together on a budget with even the simplest of cooking machines. Here are two of our favorite air fryer/microwave dorm room recipes! If you try either of these delicious dinners, feel free to leave us a comment.


Pro tip: Outside of cooking appliances, we suggest getting a compact or mini refrigerator for your room if you’re planning to make your own meals at school. This not only allows you to store your cold ingredients but also provides space to store any leftovers you may have so you can stretch recipes through the week.

 1 cup Instant Rice
 1 cup Water
 Juice of One Lime
 1 lb Chicken Breast
 1 Packet of Taco Seasoning
 ¼ cup Cilantro, Chopped
 1 Head of Lettuce, Chopped
 1 cup Diced Tomatoes
 1 cup Guacamole
 1 Can of Black Beans, Drained
 1 cup Corn (Frozen or Canned/Drained)
 ½ Red Onion, Chopped
 ½ cup Mexican Cheese

Preheat your your air fryer to 400°F.

Chop your cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes and onion.

Drain your black beans and drain/thaw your choice of frozen or canned corn.

Use the taco seasoning to season both sides of the chicken breasts.

Put the chicken in your air fryer and cook one side for four minutes. Flip the chicken breasts over and cook for an additional four minutes.

Cut your cooked chicken into strips.

Pour your instant rice and water into a microwave-safe bowl and cover it with plastic wrap.

Microwave your rice for 6 minutes, let it sit and cool for five minutes, then stir.

Toss your cooked rice in lime juice and chopped cilantro.

Add your chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, black beans, corn, onion and Mexican cheese to the rice.

If you're looking for even more flavor, add optional toppings like jalapenos, salsa, sour cream, etc.

Two half loaves of French bread pepperoni pizza

 1 Loaf of French Bread
 1 tsp Minced Garlic
 ¼ cup Butter, Softened
 1 cup Pizza Sauce
 2 tbsp Italian Seasoning
 1 cup Shredded/Grated Mozzarella
 1 cup Shredded/Grated Parmesan
 1 pinch Red Pepper Flakes, To Taste
 Pepperoni Slices, To Taste

Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F.

Slice your loaf of French bread in half.

Mix the softened butter and minced garlic together in a small bowl.

Spread the garlic butter evenly over the open faces of your bread.

Put the bread in the air fryer for five minutes until it's lightly toasted. Toasting before you build your pizza will prevent the bread from getting soggy.

Add the Italian seasoning to your pizza sauce.

Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the open faces of your bread.

Combine the mozzarella and parmesan cheese and then sprinkle it over the sauce.

Sprinkle red pepper flakes over the cheese.

Layer pepperoni slices on top.

Put your pizzas into the air fryer again for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and golden.
