How Do You Feel About Talking To Your Wrists?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

After months of speculation and waiting, two of the most popular cell phone companies have announced that they are going to ship their versions of the watchphones.  Samsung and LG will begin their releases in Europe before hopefully heading stateside.  Some features include a touch screen, speakerphone, MP3 player and of course, the ability to tell time.  Not so bad for a phone that fits over your wrist.

Now the question of the day is, if Abt were to carry these watchphones, would you buy one?  I asked store manager Lance N., and he said that “it would be great if Abt carried these watches. We are always looking for the latest gadgets to carry and test.” Salesperson Frank R. said “everything is going smaller so it was only a matter of time until you were able to wear your phone on your wrist. I think it’s a cool thing. The only negative is the price point, but it will drop if the product becomes popular.” Let us know your opinions below. Would you purchase one at Abt if we carried these products?  – Jenn A.

Sonos CR200 Now Available For Pre-Order At

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Yesterday, Sonos announced that their first touch screen controller CR200 will be available at stores at the end of next week. Their latest multi-room wireless music system controller uses a 3.5-inch color touch screen instead of the traditional button-based layout. Compared to other similar touch screen devices, the CR200’s screen utilizes the latest technology for superior response, accuracy and simplicity. You can flick to browse, type to search and touch to play all from the palm of your hand. It is a one-stop device that controls music in any room where a Sonos ZonePlayer is installed. Other new features are the removable and replaceable battery, its ability to withstand casual water spills (but it is not splash-proof or water-resistant), the Instant On feature and it comes with the Charging Cradle 200. You can pre-order the CR200 for $349 or pre-order the Sonos Bundle 250 (which also includes the ZonePlayer 90 and ZonePlayer 120) for $999. If you want to make sure that you get the CR200 or for the BU250 pre-order it on – Jenn A.

The New Sony Experience At Abt

Monday, July 27th, 2009

In this day and age, TVs and Audio Receivers are getting smarter and packing more features than ever. With the growing trend in internet shopping, it’s difficult to see and try all those extra features you pay for by just reading about it. What is Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio? What is DLNA? Can you see a difference between 120hz and 240hz? With our newly designed Sony Store at Abt, not only can you ask our knowledgeable sales staff to explain it to you, you can now walk in and actually listen to Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, stream photos and music from a server to our DLNA TVs and try all the other DLNA networking features. You can even compare and contrast 120hz and 240hz side by side, all from the comfort of a reclining leather sectional.

Not that tech savvy? Do you just want to know the difference between the entry level Sony TV compared to the top of the line XBR? No problem. By taking a stroll in the Sony store, you will see all the Sony TV series side by side. So, take a break from reading about their differences and come in to our redesigned Sony store at Abt to experience them. – Alan M.

Monday, July 20th, 2009

At Abt, we believe that customers are happier with their purchases when they know how to use them. Back in 1988, we began hosting classes for customers to explain basic usage and show tips and tricks to owning their products. All classes are free and take place in our Glenview retail store in the Apple Boutique. In addition to our sales staff taught electronic classes, we have teamed up with Directions Training to provide Microsoft Office classes.

For a limited time, join Directions professional trainers in these Abt exclusive word, excel and photoshop workshops. All are welcome to attend any and/or all free workshops. The classes will take you through a guided tour of each program and introduce to you some of the many capabilities each program offers. For each class, you will have the opportunity to learn either the Mac or the PC version of the software. Think you already know how to write a document in MS Word? Do you use Excel every day and think you know enough? Ready to step up your photo editing skills? Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of the program, know the basics, or never used them before, these classes may just bring about some key tricks and tips that can make your business, school or personal computing more productive.

With four Illinois locations and over 10 national facilities, Directions trainers can take you to the next level. Certified by Microsoft and the Illinois State Board of Education, Directions can offer you training that can advance your career, earn continuing education credits and even be issued technical certifications from top computing vendors like Microsoft, IBM & Cisco.

The free workshops are available to the public and do not require any signing up or qualifying purchases. We welcome you to visit the Apple Boutique inside Abt Electronics where our seminar room will be hosting these three Abt exclusive events. For more information on Abt’s electronic classes click here. Abt Supports The For Autistic Kids Foundation

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Gandhi once said “Be the change you seek in the world.”  The employees of Abt Electronics have recently held a variety of fundraisers and events for “For Autistic Kids,” a foundation that the Abt family established to raise awareness and understanding of autism.  This disorder affects 1 out of 150 children each year.  One of the fundraisers were “Denim Days,” where employees participated by wearing their most fashionable denim to work and making a donation to the foundation.  In addition, polos, windbreakers, golf balls and sweaters with the “For Autistic Kids” logo were available for purchase.  A decadent bake sale took place in the morning of Friday, July 10th giving employees the option of delicious chocolate cake or scrumptious lemon cake to purchase. The event was a tasteful success!  That afternoon, dozens of Abt employees and their friends and families gathered for a 5k walk-a-thon.  Participants carried their spirit on their sleeves by forming teams, making badges to wear and some even made themed shirts. This event was not just a healthy step for a great cause, but it also gave employees an opportunity to connect with fellow coworkers. The walk-a-thon ended with a finish line BBQ, celebrating our efforts and accomplishments.

The above mentioned events led up to the 8th Annual Golf Benefit that took place Monday, July 13th at the Glen View Club.  The day was broken up into a morning flight and an afternoon flight, with a dinner and silent auction in the evening.  Golfers had the opportunity to participate in the Hole-In-One Shoot Outs with prizes such as $750,000, a Harley Davidson motorcycle or Porsche vehicle.

A Day in the Life of a Cookie Girl

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

It started as a demo and grew into a store favorite. Abt has been serving freshly baked chocolate chip cookies every Saturday and Sunday for over 4 years now. Originally, the cookies were baked to showcase different ovens the store sold. Now, the cookies are baked to feed hundreds of customers every weekend. Most people walk up to the Cookie Counter and joke about how they “Would love to have this job,” but being a “Cookie Girl” is harder than someone might think.

Cookie Girls normally arrive at the store around 10:30 in the morning to prepare for the upcoming day. They first start by cleaning up the kitchen and making sure everything is nice, neat, and sanitary. They then preheat the ovens. Cookie Girls have had to learn how to use over 6 different ovens, and each girl has had their own favorite. While the ovens heat up, the girls are busy preparing the trays full of cookie dough. They then pop the trays in the oven and make coffee.

When you watch the girls work, it’s almost like they are performing a perfectly choreographed routine. There are sometimes 3 people squeezed in the small space, but they all seem to fit and do their jobs properly without bumping into each other. On an average weekend, the girls bake over 3,000 cookies. Due to the high demand, we do not make our own cookie dough. Abt purchases the dough from a company in Chicago. Every week, they deliver around 20-25 boxes of packaged cookie dough for us to use. For our special sales, the Girls normally bake around 10,500 cookies within a 7 hour period. A customer was once so impressed with the girls baking skills and the taste of the cookies, she took them home to a party and served them!

On top of baking, The Girls must know how to use and demo all the ovens, and make coffee for the customers. And you thought baking cookies was easy! – By Megan B.
