There is a new speaker on the block, or should I say, on the wall; it’s lean, sleek, and will pair nicely with new super-skinny TVs. Definitive Technologies has created the perfect Mythos speaker complement for shrinking HDTVs and LEDs.
Definitive’s latest Mythos, the XTR-50 ($699), is a trim 1.5 inches thick, 25 inches tall, and six inches wide. It’s designed to be mounted to a wall acting as a left, right, and center channel portion of a surround sound system, although It can also reside on a shelf or speaker stand, if wall mounting is not for you.
XTR-50 isn’t the first speaker of its kind, but it is the first with good sound. So, how much power does this speaker pack? It’s got two, three-and-a-half inch XTDD anodized Aluminum dome mid/bass drivers that are pressure coupled to four, three-and-a-half inch dome low-bass radiators along with one, one inch Aluminum dome tweeter—the same tweeter used in the Mythos ST Super Tower($1,999).
Ideally, you will want to add a sub, Definitive recommends ProSub300 ($399) and consider a duo of XTR-50s, one for each side of your TV. Even if they are the best-sounding skinny speakers on the market and does a great job with the higher frequencies, it still needs some assistance when it comes to hitting the lows.
