Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017

In just a few short years, Virtual Reality has grown from an expensive, high-tech toy into an approachable, accessible technology that you can enjoy in the comfort of your home for just a few hundred bucks. The Samsung Gear VR headset leverages the processing power and gorgeous display of the smartphones that millions of us have—Samsung Galaxy S6, S7 or S8 and their variants—to create an affordable option for immersive enjoyment of games and videos. Using the Gear VR is simple: pop in your Samsung Galaxy smartphone, follow a few voice and on-screen prompts, download compatible software, and get ready to have your mind blown. Celebrate Vive Day with HTC

Tuesday, April 4th, 2017

They say time flies when you’re having fun, which might be why it’s hard to believe that it’s been a full year since we first got to play with the HTC Vive virtual reality system. The Vive has been one of our favorite gadgets to come out in the last year. To mark its one-year anniversary, HTC has designated April 5th “Vive Day,” and will be celebrating with a variety of offers for new customers who pick up a Vive system on that day.

Best of CES 2017: Our Favorite Gadgets

Monday, January 9th, 2017

In a sea of biggest, brightest new products you can imagine from the industry powerhouses, sometimes it’s the clever, small items that catch your eye the most. Here are some of our favorite gadgets from CES 2017.

iPowerUp Solar Charging Phone Case

Solar-powered phone cases are nothing new, but good solar-powered phone cases are. In our experience, the cases typically never meet their claimed specs, taking much longer than expected to deliver any worthwhile juice to your phone. So we’re optimistic that the iPowerUp cases live up to their claims. Thanks to refinements in photovoltaic technology, the extra-efficient panels on this case can produce 450-500 mAh of power in one hour of sun exposure. That means a typical smartphone battery should be charged to full capacity in five to six hours. If the iPowerUp Solar Case lives up to its claims, we can see this being one of the year’s most popular iPhone accessories.

Top manufacturers like Lenovo are stepping up their game by providing more content and a better experience. The Abt team was able to get a sneak peek at Lenovo’s new VR headset at CES 2017. Just recently, Microsoft released Microsoft Holographic, a platform for VR experience that Lenovo  plans for their headsets to run on. Microsoft Holographic offers new and diverse content, providing thousands of apps available to view on VR. This means, not only will the new Lenovo Virtual Reality Headset serve for gaming purposes, but also for communication and productivity.

CES 2016: IndoTraq Indoor Tracking for Virtual Reality

Tuesday, January 5th, 2016

One of the most exciting technological advancements of the last few years has been the dawn of functional, high-quality virtual reality headsets. Products like the Oculus Rift or Samsung Gear VR hold the promise of truly immersive gaming and movie experiences. And while they have the optics and illusion of immersion down pat, they do tend to suffer when it comes to truly seamless integration of the user’s movements and the reactions of the displayed environment. Lag in the display compared to your movements, even if so slight it’s almost imperceptible, tells your brain that something’s not quite right. It breaks the virtual reality experience and is one of the leading causes of VR-helmet-induced motion sickness. This sophisticated motion-tracking system from IndoTraq promises to revolutionize the industry by offering uber-accurate, real-time motion tracking.

IndoTraq is accurate down to the millimeter, measuring the user’s position about 60 times a second. With the vast majority of displays running at a matching 60Hz refresh rate, the system ensures that what the user sees with every new frame matches their position in real space. Thanks to a miniature tracking tag that monitors 12 axes of information and transfers data over a variety of wireless protocols, the IndoTraq fits into an unobtrusive (relative to the giant goggles you’ll already be wearing, anyway) device that sits atop your head.
