Behind the Bolt: Mike Abt Goes Green

Monday, October 18th, 2010

“This is my religion…My goal is to get other businesses to be green,” the dedicated words spoken by Mike Abt, our Vice President, who has spearheaded the earth-friendly changes at Abt Electronics.  The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has released a comprehensive plan to help the counties and communities of the Chicagoland area to sustain resources and prosperity through mid-century and beyond.

A special “Portraits” section on CMAP’s website, profiles Mike and his efforts going back almost 20 years, when he began convincing his family and friends to take little steps to recycle.  He has continued to apply his unbreakable environmental habits even to the workplace.

Some of the waste reducing practices involved are the elimination of paper catalogs.  Most business is done through our web marketing.  A recycling center located just south of the main store opened 2 years ago and saves 3.5 million pounds of cardboard and paper from going to the local dump, over 240,000 pounds of Styrofoam from going to the landfill, and over 13 million pounds of appliances and electronics from ending up in a landfill each year.

“The best part about a family business is that if anyone thinks of an idea, we can implement it right away,” Mike says.  His own personal ideas have even led to the availability of numerous bicycles for employees to use whenever they want to leave the work grounds for lunch or even exercise.

Day after day, Mike continuously feels better in his efforts and strives to find new ways for the company to lessen their carbon footprint, which he believes will help leave this world beautiful and healthy for generations to come.

Abt, in the Spotlight, for Being Green

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Abt took center stage in CE Pro magazine today. In honor of Abt’s green initiatives, Julie Jacobson wrote an article to showcase Abt’s green efforts. In the Article, Abt Electronics: The Greenest A/V Retailer in the Country, Mike Abt tells Jacobson of Abt’s recycling center and bio-diesel generator.

Mike Abt, a self-proclaimed hippie, is the president of Abt Electronics and spearheads all of Abt’s eco-friendly efforts. Wind turbines aid the generator in keeping Abt off the grid during business hours. Abt proudly tells Jacobson, “Whatever the next new power thing is,” he says, “We’re on it.”

In addition to running on our own clean-burning energy, Abt is also unique, in that all Styrofoam is recycled in house. Recycling is more for than the environment than for Abt’s gain. At Abt, it’s about making a difference by recycling, not making a profit.

Abt Recycles and Aids Young Artists

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Photo Courtesy of St. John Brebeuf

Continuing the tradition from previous years, Abt donated a refrigerator box to St. John Brebeuf School in Niles.

The third graders at St. John use the box to paint a mural on. This year the kids based the mural on a book they read in class, The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner.

The story is about four orphaned children, living in a boxcar and hiding from their grandfather, who use an old refrigerator box to draw a beautiful picture on. The kids learn that their grandfather really loves them and takes care of them when he finds them.

Abt is proud to help!

Abt is A Green Giant in the Retail World

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Abt Electronics and their Green initiatives were featured on the WGN News Monday, September 21. If you missed it, view the segment here. In it, Mike Abt spoke about the West School in Glencoe, our recycling center and the steps that Abt takes everyday to make their environmental impact as small as possible.

Recently, Abt installed solar panels on the roof of West School. Abt has begun to install solar panels and windmills commercially and in residential areas too. It is important to take steps to make the environment better, safer, and cleaner for generations to come. According to Mike Abt, it is vital to educate everyone on the importance of making changes in daily life to leave fewer carbon footprints. The West School uses a website, in conjunction with the solar panels, as a tool to educate the children at the school about how much power can be generated by the solar panels.

The recycling center here at Abt is impressive. Abt is committed to making a good impact on the environment. Over 10 million pounds of appliances and electronics are recycled each year according to Bob Thomas, Director of Operations. In addition to the appliances and Electronics, over 3.5 million pounds of cardboard and paper are recycled and 20,000 pounds of Styrofoam.

Abt is completely open about the business they conduct. People come from all over the world to see the different aspects of the business in action. Site tours are often given. A natural gas generator powers the store for nine hours each day, lights that automatically turn off when someone is not in the room, and solar panels on the roof that generate energy are all examples of the ways that Abt is trying to make a difference. To read about the different ways that Abt is making a difference, check out our Green Program.
