World Autism Awareness Day

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Today is World Autism Awareness Day. People all over the world are wearing blue for autism awareness.

“Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today.” (Autism Society of America)

Wear Blue Friday for WAAD

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Don’t forget to wear BLUE tomorrow in honor of World Autism Awareness Day. Also, wear blue jeans to work and make a $5 donation to For Autistic Kids.

World Autism Awareness Day shines a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis. WAAD activities help to increase and develop world knowledge of the autism epidemic and impart information regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Additionally, WAAD celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism and is a day when individuals with autism are warmly welcomed and embraced in community events around the globe. Abt Supports The For Autistic Kids Foundation

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Gandhi once said “Be the change you seek in the world.”  The employees of Abt Electronics have recently held a variety of fundraisers and events for “For Autistic Kids,” a foundation that the Abt family established to raise awareness and understanding of autism.  This disorder affects 1 out of 150 children each year.  One of the fundraisers were “Denim Days,” where employees participated by wearing their most fashionable denim to work and making a donation to the foundation.  In addition, polos, windbreakers, golf balls and sweaters with the “For Autistic Kids” logo were available for purchase.  A decadent bake sale took place in the morning of Friday, July 10th giving employees the option of delicious chocolate cake or scrumptious lemon cake to purchase. The event was a tasteful success!  That afternoon, dozens of Abt employees and their friends and families gathered for a 5k walk-a-thon.  Participants carried their spirit on their sleeves by forming teams, making badges to wear and some even made themed shirts. This event was not just a healthy step for a great cause, but it also gave employees an opportunity to connect with fellow coworkers. The walk-a-thon ended with a finish line BBQ, celebrating our efforts and accomplishments.

The above mentioned events led up to the 8th Annual Golf Benefit that took place Monday, July 13th at the Glen View Club.  The day was broken up into a morning flight and an afternoon flight, with a dinner and silent auction in the evening.  Golfers had the opportunity to participate in the Hole-In-One Shoot Outs with prizes such as $750,000, a Harley Davidson motorcycle or Porsche vehicle.
