Sony Reveals World’s Lightest 8-Inch Notebook

One of the hottest new products we’ve seen so far at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is Sony’s VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC notebook, an eight-inch marvel that weighs just 1.4 pounds and has an amazing, ultra-wide 1,600 x 768 resolution LED-backlit XBRITE-ECO LCD display. It’s also packing Bluetooth, an embedded GPS module, 802.11n WiFi, 3G WWAN, and a battery that will last four hours. An optional larger-capacity battery will run for eight hours.

These photos we shot at Sony’s CES exhibit should give you a good idea of the size of this unit. The keyboard extends to the perimeters of the chassis, and spacing between the keys was designed to reduce typing mistakes. There’s also a built-in webcam and an instant-mode option, which will take you into Sony’s Xross Media Bar interface for quick boot ups and access to music, video, photos, and the Web. An optical drive is optional.

“The VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC is your portal to the world, delivering entertainment and computing in a head-turning device that’s small enough to put in your pocket,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics. It comes in a variety of colors, including garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white, and classic black, with matching carrying cases and Bluetooth color-coordinated mice also available.

Abt will have the VAIO P notebook available in our Sony Store and on our website later this month. Pricing will start at $899.  —by Graham W.
