Slow Cooker Cider

Outside our windows, it's currently cold, cloudy, and raining; basically a typical November afternoon. It's also the perfect situation for a warm drink, like this spiced apple cider. Made in a slow cooker, it uses fresh, seasonal ingredients, doesn't take much work, and is a great pick-me-up for days like today. And, with the addition of your favorite rum or whiskey, it's a great cocktail for your upcoming holiday party. Plus, it smells fantastic, filling your home with the scent of holiday spices. Let's get cooking.

Yields12 Servings
 8 cups water
 4 honeycrisp apples
 1 pear
 1 orange
 4 cinnamon sticks
2 tbsp mulling spices: all spice, whole cloves, nutmeg, and cardamon
 ¼ of a pomegranate
1

Start by prepping the fruits. Core and cut the apples and pear into wedges (we used the Rösle apple cutter, which works great for smaller fruits), slice the orange, and remove the pomegranate seeds.

2

Combine all of the ingredients—the fruits, spices, and water—in your slow-cooker. We used a 4-quart cooker, which was just large enough to fit our concoction.

3

Cook the mixture on low for 8 hours, or high for 4 hours. When done cooking, scoop out the fruit and spices, then pour the liquid through a strainer to remove spice residue and fruit bits. Pour into serving glasses, garnish with an orange slice and a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy!
