What do you get when you take an 8,000 pound tank, 60,000 pounds of water, a few Moray Eels, a 2.5 foot Leopard Shark, accompanied with other fish and put them all together? The answer – the Salt Water Aquarium at Abt Electronics and Appliances! One of the many store attractions, the 20 foot long, 8 feet deep aquarium has served as the home to a variety of sea water fish over the past seven years. Over 100 fish occupy the salt water aquarium. Their meals are a combination of meat and plant life, giving the fish a balance of nutrients needed for proper growth.
Keeping up with the fish is no easy task. For starters, the tank is cleaned twice a week by a diver in a wetsuit who uses brushes and high pressure water sprayers to clean the acrylic and the coral. The strore has designated a room for filtration purposes where the water is run through both a mechanical and biological system. Once the water has been oxygenated, it is processed through a protein skimmer, and then filtered back into the tank.
