Marathon Training Gear Must-Haves

Springtime (and last weekend’s Boston Marathon) heralds what so many runners love to eat, sweat and breathe: marathon season. In the US, we’ve kicked off these runs all across the country, from the East Coast to the Midwest. In Chicagoland we’re excited to be a part of the great Chicago Marathon later in the season, but running this 26.2-mile tread always requires a tough training period. And participants will tell you that it’s one of the most rewarding things they strive for each year. Check out some of Abt’s suggestions for intelligent marathon training gear below.

Smartwatches Keep You On Track

If you want to stay as connected to your training as possible, make sure your marathon training gear includes a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Explore the functions you’re interested in, like vibrations every time you pass a mile, alerts that let you keep your heart rate in check, and records of running sessions and your stats. Cellular models from brands like Garmin and Fitbit will help, too. With this feature, there’s no need to bring your phone along to call or text.

Headphones For Pounding The Pavement

26.2 miles is a long way to run with no entertainment. Why not pick up a good pair of workout headphones to break up the tedium?  When buying, you’ll want to choose something as lightweight and comfortable as possible. For many, that might be something like the bone conduction models from Shokz, (formerly AfterShockz), or earphones that curve around your ear so you know they won’t fall out, even when you put the speed on. Whatever shape or size, you’ll want something light. That means a pair of over-ear headphones just won’t do.

Train Indoors on a Treadmill

You won’t always be able to run outside (though many prefer it to hitting the gym). Instead, invest in a treadmill for powerful, indoor marathon training gear. Explore models that can stand up to high-impact running, jogging and walking, with abilities to track stats like heart rate and how far you’ve run. Some even fold away after a workout session.

Accessories: Water Bottles and Sunglasses

Accessories like water bottles and sunglasses might seem unnecessary. However, this marathon training gear is important for staying healthy on both the day of and every day leading up to the big event. Water keeps you hydrated and healthy. Choose a bottle that’s easy to carry and light. When it comes to sunglasses, the perfect pick is easy. Look for any pair that’s polarized to keep your eyes protected from the sun. Sports models are a good idea, too.

Whether this is your first race or your twentieth, it’s important to make sure you’re well-equipped with the right marathon training gear. Head into Abt to see more of our fitness selection, and we wish you the best of luck as you get pumped for your run.
