Abt rolled out the red carpets to showcase the LG 84LM9600 Ultra High Definition TV.
Last night’s LG Ultra HD TV VIP Event at Abt was a resounding success, with a turnout of over 500 guests. After braving a line that spanned the width of the salesfloor, attendees were entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $500 Abt Gift card. Once inside the Atrium, they enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Jolane’s Café and were given an up-close view of the LG UHDTV and its breath-taking image quality.

Reps from LG were on hand to answer viewers’ questions and take the UHDTV through its paces, switching between HD and Ultra HD feeds, in both traditional and 3D modes. A dozen pair of 3D glasses went around, giving attendees the chance to soak up life-like videos of expansive landscape scenes and in-your-face shots of athletes leaping off the screen. The glasses created what was, for us, one of the most enjoyable parts of the evening: watching the watchers. It was great to see the looks on viewers’ faces as they became immersed in the starry night of the Utah desert, or flinched in anticipation of the baseball headed towards them.

Everyone in attendance, even the technophobes, could tell they were looking at a TV on the cutting edge of video technology. So, not surprisingly, one of the most common questions was about the price. The LG 84LM9600 retails for $16,999, which, of course, elicited some gasps from the crowd. While that might sound steep, it’s really only two or three times what you’d expect to pay for a high-quality 1080p TV of comparable size. And it’s certainly not as unbelievable as in 1990, when we stocked a 43-inch Sony CRT Tube TV—at the time it was the world’s biggest tube television—which cost $40,000. Abt Electronics is the only retailer in the Chicagoland area to stock the LG UHDTV, and we’ve already delivered a few units to satisfied customers. For those of you on the fence, the folks at LG announced last night they will be bringing both 55-inch and 65-inch Ultra High Definition TVs to the market some time this year.
