Today is Mardis Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, a day devoted to unrepentant gluttony. For those of us in the Chicagoland area, the quintessential way to mark the occasion is by enjoying paczki, a decadent donut-type dessert that hails from Poland. Others may be more familiar with king cake or various other traditional Mardis Gras foods. Whatever your go-to indulgence is, the point is to enjoy more of it than you would any other day, especially if it’s something you’re going to be giving up for Lent. Today is the day that you go all out. And while we haven’t figured out the secret to making the perfect paczki, we have made some other drool-worthy desserts that will do the job when it comes to going overboard on sweets. They can all be made with common ingredients that you might already have on hand, and most won’t require more than a mixer or cast iron skillet to make.
