The secret to intelligent, immersive audio is a selfie? Well, sort of. The Sony 360 Reality Audio system aims to deliver a customized, enveloping audio experience through any old pair of headphones. A key component of the this system is an analysis of your ear shape, which is done through the accompanying app. Snap a pic of your ear, and the app will analyze it to determine what audio processing tweaks are best needed to make the 360° experience most convincing for you personally.
While the system works with any headphones (although, of course, Sony suggests using some of their high end cans like the absolutely stellar WH-1000XM3 noise cancelling headphones), you’ll need to use a music service that supports Sony 360 Reality Audio tracks. That currently includes TIDAL, deezer, and nugs.net, but should continue to grow to include other popular streaming services. You can check out more about the science behind the process in Sony’s video below.
