For years, rollable and foldable displays have been a staple of futuristic sci-fi technology. And while they were pie-in-the-sky ideas for most of that time, in recent years they’ve inched closer and closer to viable consumer-ready products. Advancements in OLED technology have made flexible displays possible without compromising on image quality. Last year, featured alongside the rest of the LG OLED TV lineup, we got to see a working conceptual model of a flexible OLED TV that rolled up and disappeared into an attached housing. This year, the LG roll-up OLED is ready for primetime.
Dubbed the OLED TV R, this malleable monitor is slated to hit the market sometime later this year. The OLED TV R can retract completely into a monolithic base completely or only partially, giving three different ways to view the screen. And while the form factor is obviously the major selling point of this new set, it doesn’t skimp on any of the typical features you’d find in a high-end LG TV, i.e. this isn’t a gimmick product that implements new tech at the expense of picture quality or functionality. LG is promising the same picture quality as the rest of their OLED TV lineup, with a 120Hz panel powered by their new Alpha 9 CPU. Full smart functionality is present as well, with LG’s webOS software and Alexa and Airplay 2 integration. Plus, that base does more than just hold the rolled screen—it also hides a 4.2-channel Dolby Atmos soundbar. The LG OLED TV R looks like a minimalist’s dream television, an entire entertainment system packed into a single stark box.
