Every year, we get a chance to visit the ASUS CES display, tucked away from the madness of the convention center main hall. It’s a much better environment to get hands-on with the brand’s arsenal of gaming and productivity products. The first thing to catch our attention this year was the ASUS ROG Mothership GZ700. Not quite laptop, not quite all-in-one PC (we’re actually not sure what to call it), it is quite possibly the ultimate portable gaming PC.

ASUS subverts traditional laptop design by housing all of the components behind the monitor, instead of under the keyboard, akin to a Microsoft Surface. This offers the opportunity to build a thicker machine without worrying about screwing up ergonomics, and drastically improves cooling on the Mothership. As a result ASUS can utilize desktop-caliber components in a design that’s as portable as your typical mid-tier productivity laptop.

The modular keyboard can be used attached to the Mothership, or connected wirelessly.

The ASUS ROG Mothership sports an overclocked Intel Core i9-8950HK processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 GPU and triple NVMe SSDs in RAID 0, pushing the most demanding games to a 17.3-inch 144Hz AHVA panel with a 3-ms response time. It requires a bit of effort to build—including a meticulously-shaped motherboard and a CNC-milled aluminum chassis that takes 20 hours to craft—but the result is a no-compromise portable gaming PC that rivals anything you’d find on a desk. Check out the video for a better look at the ASUS ROG Mothership and its radical form factor:
