In recent years, we’ve witnessed the debut and meteoric growth of smart technology embedded into all manner of products, and seen the surprising ways the technology can shape our lives. We’ve encountered it in the kitchen—from smart refrigerators to smart ovens—and in the fitness industry, where activity trackers have been a runaway hit. Individually, these products help you keep track of the food you eat or your movement levels, but often leave it up to you to connect the dots. Samsung is taking all of those smart concepts and connecting them in an all-encompassing system that will help you stay on track with your commitment to health.
At CES, Samsung took us through a typical scenario that would link all of your smart products into a daily routine that will help you stick to your healthy lifestyle changes. The example starts with Samsung Bixby, the company’s digital voice assistant. Point your Samsung camera at some food, and Bixby Vision not only identifies the food, but also gives you nutritional information for it, and can then add that meal to your daily food log on Samsung Health. As you move through your daily routine, your Samsung Gear smartwatch will track your activity, and sync and record that information as well. From there, you can make important decisions about what to eat next, or whether you need to move more. Pretty standard activity tracker stuff.
Samsung Health links all of Samsung’s smart products into an all-encompassing system to help you maintain a healthier lifestyle.
But Samsung Health takes it one step further, putting that information literally at your fingertips, on the massive display of their Family Hub refrigerator. When you go to grab a snack from the fridge, you can see how many calories you’ve already burned, and how many calories you have allotted for the remainder of the day. If you’re stumped for a meal idea, the Family Hub can recommend a meal to you, based on what you have in your fridge and whether it meets your nutritional needs. And once you decide what to make, the fridge can tell your Samsung smart oven to start preheating at the temperature needed for that meal.
When smart kitchen appliances first began to hit the market, there was lots of questioning of their relevance, and whether anyone would utilize the connectivity for anything more than a gimmick. The all-encompassing interconnectivity of Samsung devices to create this new smart ecosystem—simplifying kitchen tasks and making it easier to live healthily—is a great example of the potential of these products.
