CES 2016: Withings Thermo Smart Thermometer

Since the dawn of the Internet of Things, CES has been the place to see the latest in connected devices, both those ready for store shelves and the more conceptual ideas. Perhaps no other category debuts more connected devices than the health and fitness industry. Withings is a French consumer electronics company who has carved out a niche offering an assortment of connected health devices, from smart scales to elegant activity trackers. We caught up with them to find out more about their latest smart device, the Withings Thermo. The Thermo is a smart thermometer that promises to simplify the often-arduous task of taking accurate body temperature.  Instead of going under the tongue or into, uh, other places, the Thermo is a temporal thermometer. While that sounds like some sort of time-travel measurement device, it just means that the Thermo takes your temperature at the temporal point of your head, aka your temple.

A collection of 16 integrated sensors take 4,000 micro-measurements in just two seconds, making the Thermo as easy to use as a stick of HeadOn (“Apply directly to the forehead!”). Withings says the Thermo is just as accurate as any other form of temperature measurement, if not more so. Once the temperature is taken, the info is sent directly to the corresponding smartphone app via Wi-Fi. One of the main benefits of a Wi-Fi link is its always-connected state, so the user does not have to pair with the device before each use, as they would need to with a Bluetooth connection. From the app, the user can create a report by adding symptoms, additional notes, or even a photo of themselves. This report can then be forwarded to a doctor or pharmacist, helping expedite the process of diagnosing the user, or can be saved to a calendar to serve as a reference for future doctor visits. Time saved at the doctor and hassles averted when taking temperature could make the Withings Thermo a great investment for families with young children.
