Family Internet Safety Day with Eero

Just in time for the new school year, our friends at eero are stopping by for an afternoon dedicated to improving your family’s safety in both the virtual world and the real one. Today more than ever, it’s important to be extra vigilant when it comes to cybersecurity. While many of us are familiar with the typical email phishing scams and can avoid being duped, what we often aren’t aware of is how our networking hardware can be attacked from afar. But it’s a widespread enough problem that the FBI recently published an advisory warning consumers that foreign cyber-criminals can “target home and office routers and networked devices worldwide.” Family Internet Safety Day is a chance for us to help educate our community about how we can all be safer on the internet by recognizing threats and making sure our home networks are set up to minimize vulnerability and maximize safety.

Co-founded by Chicago native Nick Weaver, eero creates products that make it easy to set up something know as a “mesh network” in their own home. A mesh network uses a series of devices, spread throughout the home, to blanket a large space with as strong, consistent WiFi signal. Eero eliminates the signal dead spots that most homes have in areas far from their WiFi router. Eero also integrates industry-leading encryption into their hardware, making your network resilient against hardware hacking attempts. Adding the eero Plus subscription service gives users even more security options, including ad-blocking and VPN services.

At our Family Internet Safety Day, members of eero’s founding team will be on-site to offer tips on how to keep your family safe online. They’ll address smart web-surfing practices like knowing how to recognize if a website is trustworthy, along with getting the most out of your hardware and ensuring it can stand up to hacking attempts. Attendees are invited to bring in old networking devices for recycling, in exchange for $50 off the purchase of a new eero system. And everyone present will receive 1 year of eero Plus digital security (a $99 value) for free.

Family Internet Security Day takes place in the Abt Atrium on Saturday, August 25th, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
