Right now, it’s a blustery 29° outside our windows, with snow and a low of 17° expected tonight. It. Is. Cold. And while coffee, tea, and soups are always good options to warm you up, some days, you need a little extra decadence to win the battle against the winter blues. Something so comforting that it warms more than just your stomach. It’s the perfect day for a piping-hot cup of creamy, chocolaty hot cocoa. It also happens to be National Cocoa Day!
This is a quick recipe that needs only a few ingredients—many of which you probably have in your fridge or pantry. And it will run circles around that powdered hot chocolate mix you’ve had sitting around since last winter. Read on to find out how to make this creamy chocolate comfort drink.
Hot Cocoa Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (regular whipping cream will also work)
- 1/4 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (aka Nutella)
- 1 Tbsp. finely chopped bittersweet chocolate
- mini marshmallows
In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over a medium flame. When the liquid is warm, add in the Nutella and chocolate chips and whisk until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer. And that’s it! Pour your hot cocoa into a mug, garnish with marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks, or whatever other sweet toppings you have on hand. Then find a cozy spot where you can enjoy your cocoa and stop thinking about winter for a few minutes.
