Come experience the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 Exclusive Listening Event 2/27-28 at Abt
Bang & Olufsen has long been known as a brand that pushes the boundaries of speaker engineering, blurring the lines between art and audio, between sculpture and sound, to create products that are as visually exciting as they are aurally appealing. B&O’s newest release is perhaps their most brazen ever. Created to celebrate the brand’s 90th birthday, the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 is a state-of-the art loudspeaker unlike anything that has come before. Whether you’re first introduced to the BeoLab 90 by seeing it or hearing it perform, there’s a good chance you’ll come away impressed.
Eschewing the traditional rectangular construction of a typical home speaker, the BeoLab 90’s multi-faceted cabinets have a curving, organic quality that suggests maybe they were crafted by a futuristic civilization of space-travelers and gifted to present-day audiophiles as a sign of things to come. At first glance, there’s no clear front to each BeoLab speaker, with the flowing black grills and polished aluminum frame wrapping around the entire structure in diamond-grid pattern. They are among the most visually-interesting speakers we’ve laid our eyes on.
But the unique construction is not just a showpiece. Beneath the wraparound design is an omnidirectional array of eighteen separate Scan-Speak loudspeaker drivers, each powered by its own digital amplifier. Altogether, the system can put out up to 8200 watts per loudspeaker. And lest you think this is an exercise in simply producing maximum power, sound quality be damned, B&O’s engineers focused on maintaining the audiophile levels of sound imaging, thanks to a pair of high-tech systems. B&O’s new Active Room Compensation technology takes speaker calibration to the next level. After measuring the acoustical characteristics of your room, the BeoLab 90s can, thanks to their 360° design, compensate in truly every direction, creating the perfect listening setup regardless of room shape or speaker placement. If you’re more of a hands-on listener, B&O’s Beam Width Control gives you total rein over imaging, allowing you to direct the “sweet spot” to your exact listening location. A dedicated smartphone app makes it easy to adjust the BeoLab 90’s sound characteristics to match the audience.
Tying it all together is a base made of cast aluminum and weighing it at nearly 150 lbs—before adding the rest of the componentry. A completed speaker, once outfitted with the dozen-and-a-half drivers and amplifiers, wrapped in the polished aluminum trim and wooden base, measures over 4 feet tall and weighs in at over 300 lbs.
The Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 speakers are one of those landmark pieces of audio equipment that become an instant classic from their first demonstration. At nearly $80,000 for the pair, they’re not a luxury that most will be able to enjoy, though they do beg to be experienced in person at least one time, if the opportunity presents itself. Thankfully, our Chicagoland customers will have just such a chance. This Saturday and Sunday, February 27-28, Abt will host a special event featuring demonstrations of the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 90 speakers. If you’re interested in hearing what the BeoLab 90 can do, we invite you to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime listening experience.
