Visiting Abt Electronics During Construction

Friday, June 20th, 2014

In case you missed it, Abt recently announced plans for an extensive store expansion for our Glenview, IL location. While normal store operations won’t be interrupted during the project, there will be a few minor inconveniences to deal with. Since we’re now in the first phase of construction, we wanted to let our local customers in on the slight changes they may have to deal with. So if you’re planning on visiting Abt this weekend or in the coming months, here are a few things to be aware of.

New Apple iMac Now More Affordable, Available at Abt.

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

apple imac

Get the new Apple iMac at Abt.

Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the newest addition to their iMac family, a 21.5-inch version designed to be more affordable. Starting at just $1099, this new model should appeal to casual users and those who want to try out the Apple ecosystem but have been turned off by high prices. Like the larger and more expensive models, the new iMac is still built around the same all-in-one aluminum enclosure and stunning LED-backlit IPS display which have garnered tons of critical praise since this form factor was introduced. Underneath the display, you’ll find a 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor and Intel HD 5000 Graphics, along with a 500GB hard drive and 8GB of included memory. One important caveat with this entry-level iMac is that the RAM is not removable or upgradable, so users will be stuck with 8GB for the life of the machine. Of course, 8GB is still plenty of memory for most tasks likely to be performed by the casual user, so that shouldn’t be an issue. Click the link to order or find out more info about the new iMac.

Top Ten Things To Do at Abt (Besides Shop)

Top Ten Things to do at Abt (Besides Shop)

abt eyes

Anyone who’s visited Abt knows there’s a lot to do at the store besides shop for merchandise.  We like to think of ourselves as a complete destination, filled with attractions and interactive activities suited for all ages.  So next time you’re about to take your family to the mall or a big box store on Sunday, think about giving us a chance first.  Need some reasons why?  Here are the top ten things to do at the Abt Store (in no particular order).

1)   Spin The Granite Globe

Abt has a German-made 5,381 lb granite ball in the showroom; it is one of 90 in the world. It floats on 12 lbs of water pressure which makes it so easy to move that a 3-year-old can spin the globe. It actually rotates on the approximate axis of the earth, when someone isn’t spinning it, that is. Check it out!

2)   Catch a movie in The David Abt Theater

Launched last year, this remarkable theatre boasts a Bowers & Wilkins 7.4 surround sound speaker package, a DPI Titan LED 1080P Projector with Anamorphic Lens, and Palliser Home Theatre Seating.  In other words, it’s the closet you’ll ever get to the theater experience outside an actual movie theater.  The theater also includes a 3D star field package on the ceiling to give viewers a drive-in movie feel.

3)   Test your photography skills at the Fish Tank

The 7,500 gallon salt water Abt aquarium is home to lots of beautiful fish and eel, and is the largest privately-owned aquarium in Illinois. The vibrant fish and coral also make great subjects for customers to test photo and video quality on, so you’ll find our selection of HD camcorders lined up along two sides of the tank. It’s important to keep the aquarium looking spotless, and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of our scuba-suited cleaning guy inside!

Benvenuti a Abt.com!

abt intl

One of the great things about Chicago is that it’s a true cultural melting pot. People from all over the world settle here, and they bring along part of their home countries.

As a company employing over 1200 people from the greater Chicagoland area, it’s only natural that Abt would reflect that same diversity. Our employees come from six continents (working on getting some penguins employed to make it all seven) and dozens of countries. Did you know that employees at Abt speak over 20 different languages? So if someone ever needs help ordering an amplifier in Armenian, a grill in Gujarati or a range in Russian, there’s an Abt team member that can help.

And to better help our online customers, we recently rolled out a language translation option for Abt.com. Powered by Google Translate, users can now shop the Abt Electronics website in one of ten foreign languages.  To activate translation, simply scroll to the bottom of any page at Abt.com and pick your desired language from the menu bar on the left side.

Choose your language from the menu bar.

From that point on, all Abt.com webpages will be auto-translated into the language you’ve chosen. And while computer translations aren’t always perfect, this option should hopefully make the online shopping experience a little easier for many of our customers.

And with that, we say adios, au revoir, ciao, auf wiedersehen, and until next time!

Abt Electronics is Expanding!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

Abt Electronics is getting bigger! In case you missed it, earlier today Abt officially announced plans for an upcoming expansion that will add a massive amount of warehouse space to our Glenview store.

Architectural rendering of the planned expansion.

Our expansion will add 100,000 square feet of warehouse space to our existing location.

We’re always looking for ways to get our customers more of what they want, and often get suggestions about particular products. So over the past few years, we’ve expanded our product line to include categories like mattresses, dining furniture, water heaters and HVAC equipment. It’s been a positive experience, except for the one big (literally) drawback: These products take up space, and lots of it!

So, in order to keep things moving smoothly as we explore future product choices, we decided we need a bit more room to grow. The 100,000 square-foot addition will give us room to carry extra stock in our most popular items, as well as even more new categories. We’ll also be adding in dozens more loading docks for our own delivery fleet, which will let us get our trucks loaded and on the road quicker every day. By letting us stock more of what you love and get it delivered more efficiently, this expansion will lead to a better shopping experience for both local and national customers.

It will also give us a chance to embrace more green technologies. Like the rest of our existing warehouse, the new section will be lit with energy-efficient, motion-sensor activated LED lighting, so we only use energy to light areas where workers are. We’re also exploring the use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling the new area, along with adding to our existing array of wind turbines and solar panels.

We’re hoping to break ground in July, so stay tuned to the Abt Blog and Abt Facebook page for updates and photos of the progress.
