Save Energy By Checking Your Fridge Door Gaskets

Monday, April 28th, 2014

As the weather warms, it’s a good idea to make sure your fridge is operating as efficiently as possible. A simple check of the door gaskets can determine whether or not they’re sealing properly. If the seal is not ideal, cool air leaks out and your fridge will have to work extra hard to keep foods chilled. Thankfully, a quick cleaning is often enough to return your fridge door gaskets to factory-new condition. Shirley explains in this handy quick tip.

Abt Electronics’ Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Drive

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Our commitment to helping the environment is one of the things we’re most proud of here at Abt. From our on-site recycling center to green methods of energy production, we always try to go above and beyond what’s expected if it helps make the world a little bit greener and cleaner. With Earth Day just around the corner, we’d like to take the opportunity to make it easier for our local community to be environmentally-friendly, with our second annual E-Waste Recycling Day, taking place April 22nd.

Electronic Waste is a problem that’s growing around the world, as more people buy new electronics and dispose of their old products. In 2010, consumers in U.S. disposed of 2.4 million tons of electronic waste. Computers, and computer monitors and peripherals made up about half the total. Also included in that total were an estimated 152,000,000 mobile devices. Essentially, 1 of every 2 people in the USA disposed of a cell phone, pager or PDA in 2010. The worst bit of information about these stats is that just 27% of the total disposed E-Waste was recycled. The rest ended up in landfills, where dangerous elements like lead, cadmium and mercury can leak out of the products and into the earth, potentially contaminating the groundwater supply and causing serious health risks.

On April 22nd, Abt and the City of Chicago are joining forces for  our 2nd Annual Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Drive, which will help our local customers properly dispose of their unneeded electronics with minimal effort. While we always welcome drop-offs of e-waste and old appliances at our Recycling Center in Glenview, that can be quite a haul for our more distant customers. The Earth Day Recycle Drive brings drop-off locations out into the community for hassle-free recycling. (more…)

Pioneer Brings Apple CarPlay To Older Cars.

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

Revealed at last month’s Geneva Auto Show, the Apple Carplay system is an integrated hardware and software ecosystem which brings the iPhone experience to vehicle dashboards. Featuring Siri voice control, CarPlay gives users total hands-free reign over the most popular iOS functions including access to Apple Maps; streaming and stored music libraries; and the ability to make phone calls, check voicemail and send and receive messages. Users can also interact via the display’s touchscreen, or even with each vehicles unique physical controls.

If you are familiar with GoPro, you will already know it’s a great way to record stunts of many shapes and sizes.  Strap it onto your helmet, or anything else to get a first-person-perspective, or a handful of other creative ways to record whatever you want! GoPro was the choice for Felix Baumgartner when he ascended more than 24 miles above the earth to the edge of space.  Literally!

It was showcased live and he landed safely.  The video he took was released, along with the full story.  Check it all out on the video below!  Shop Abt’s wide selection of GoPro and GoPro accessories and start recording your greatest daredevil moments.  Remember though, safety first!

Abt’s Power Tips for your iPad

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014

Once you get an iPad, you can’t wait to open it up, and start installing your favorite applications and accessories.  With so many out there, which ones should you shop for first?  Well, here are some of my favorite choices for great iPad apps and accessories.

Microsoft Office for iPad.  This has made a lot of news here lately.  It gives your iPad the ability to run Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now.  While the iPad has had Apple’s productivity suite for a long time now the introduction of Office for iPad opens up an whole new level of productivity for businesses customers who have only used Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Best thing about the software is now you do not have to convert documents from one format to another.  You do need a Office365 subscription to take advantage of a lot of features, but with 5 user licenses for computers and iPhone/iPad integration it is actually much nicer now than it was previously.

News Applications – I am constantly trying to stay up to date with the world.  News Applications allow me to do so quickly and easily.  Some of my favorites are

  • USA Today
  • Chicago Tribune
  • CNN
  • Engadget
  • DIGG – probably my favorite since it does most of the work for me and gives me stories that are trending automatically.
  • DropBox/OneDrive – both of these are cloud based storage applications.  Great for someone who needs to have access to files across multiple devices.
  • LinkedIn – I have found both vendors and customers using LinkedIn.  It also has great news articles and information for what is going on in the world

Keyboard Cases – One of the hardest things for me to do on any tablet is type a document or work on a spreadsheet easily.  With a nice keyboard case it makes it much easier to do the basic business applications that I have to do on a daily basis.  I really like the following cases.

iPad 2, 3, 4 – http://www.abt.com/product/70475/Zagg-FOLPROBLKLIT101.htm

iPad Air – http://www.abt.com/product/76187/Zagg-ZKFHFBKLIT105.html

Mophie Juice Packs – I am a big believer of never losing power on my devices, and it never fails that I lose power at the worst possible times.    I always carry one of these with me and since it is good for both iPads and iPhones I never have to worry about running out of power.

Of course, these are just a few examples of all the amazing things you can do with your new iPad.  For more information, stop by Abt’s Connect Tech and Apple Store, or shop Abt.com!
