Chicago Fire at Abt!

Friday, February 28th, 2014

Chicago’s been a real hotspot for TV and Film locations in the last few years, from the blockbuster Batman movies to the popular Chicago Fire and Chicago PD TV series. While Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films used Chicago as a stand-in for the fictional Gotham City, Fire/PD programs are obviously set in Sweet Home Chicago and also do all of their filming here. Late last year, Abt was approached by the production company behind Chicago Fire about using our building for some on-location shooting. With hundreds of thousands of square feet of indoor space, throughout several buildings, Abt has a variety of features that can make great backdrops for filming. There’s warehouse space, office cubicles, a fully-equipped woodshop, working kitchens, a world-class indoor theater…tons of variety to offer an eager filmmaker (We’ve previously had cameos in TV commercials for the Illinois State Lottery Commission and BMO Harris Bank). Chicago Fire was specifically interested in our warehouse.

Windows XP Says Goodbye

Monday, February 24th, 2014

One of the most well-known computer programs is finally meeting its end. After 13 years of existence and having been used in countless homes, schools and offices, Windows XP is finally officially being phased out.

Windows XP is on its way out.

As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer be providing support for Windows XP. What does this mean for Windows XP users? Will your computer cease functioning? Fortunately, the answer to that is No, your computer won’t stop working. When April 9th rolls around, your computer will work just the same as it always has. However, from that point on, you will no longer be receiving crucial automatic updates from Microsoft. These updates ensure that your computer continues to function with newer programs and hardware, as well as protecting you against newly developed virus and spyware. So, while you’ll have no problem using your computer once XP support ends, you might be putting yourself at undue risk. Advanced users might be okay with this arrangement, and could likely figure out how to stay protected. But what’s the average user to do?

When faced with an operating system End of Life, there are three main options:

1.)   Do nothing, and continue happily using the old software

2.)  Keep your old machine, but upgrade the OS

3.)   Get an entirely new machine with the latest OS

Wearable Technology

Wearable Technology: The Future is Now. Part I

If we were to sum up one of the biggest current tech trends, and one that will make 2014 a very exciting year, it would only take two words: wearable technology. What is “wearable technology?” (Hint, it’s not Flava Flav’s clock pendant). The term covers lots of products, but they all have one thing in common: advanced technology fit into a gadget that can be worn on the body in an unassuming form factor. Wearable technology takes shape in a variety of types, from smart glasses to wrist-mounted computers.

Now, the idea of wearable technology is nothing new. It’s been a mainstay of pop fiction for decades, from Dick Tracy’s wristwatch radio to the Star Trek combadge. Of course, when the first true forms of wearable technology debuted—the Casio calculator watch, for instance—they had limited functionality.

But what was the stuff of science-fiction movies just 20 years ago is now a reality, and is everyday marching closer to being the norm.

Wearable Technology has become a real buzzword in just the last year or so, but many people don’t realize how much it’s been present in our lives in recent years, especially the fitness industry. Visit any gym, and you’re bound to see dozens of people wearing heart rate monitors. A simple transmitter straps to their chest, measures their heart rate and beams that info to their wrist watch. That’s wearable technology. Garmin added to the heart rate monitoring wristwatch concept by integrating GPS into many of the Garmin Forerunner GPS Watch models. These track your heart rate and also accurately measure the distances you run.

A Look Inside the Abt Service Departments

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

As part of our upcoming Customer Appreciation Sale, we decided to take an inside look at two of the most essential parts of our business, areas which often don’t get the thanks they deserve: The Abt Service Departments. Abt’s commitment to our customers goes beyond just the in-store or online purchase process. We’re here with you for the long haul, providing service and support well after you receive your new TV or kitchen appliances. One of the things that sets Abt apart from other retailers is the fact that we are an authorized service center for every brand we sell. If it breaks, we can fix it. In fact, our service departments are one of the main reasons a certain leading consumer info magazine has voted us a top appliance retailer in the country four years in a row.

The Abt service departments are split into two sections: Electronics and Appliances. Each department has its own team of in-store technicians with a dedicated workshop area in our Glenview, IL store, as well as road-going technicians and phone service reps. Altogether, the service departments contain hundreds of employees, tens of thousands of spare parts and countless years of collective repair know-how.
