Take the tailgate indoors with this perfect pulled pork recipe.
This recipe takes a little more work than the previous ones, but the reward of perfect pulled pork sandwiches is definitely worth it. And since it also utilizes a slow cooker, once you get the ingredients cooking you can head back to the pregame festivites. It comes from Emily, our Media Coordinator.
Perfect Pass Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Prep Time: 30 Minutes
Cook Time: 6-8 hours
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 boneless pork shoulder (3 to 4 lbs) with excess fat trimmed
1 cup chicken stock or chicken broth
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups of your favorite barbecue sauce
Potato buns, Hawaiian Bread or your favorite rolls
Layer bottom of slow cooker with sliced onions, cover with broth.
Mix sugar and all spices, rub into pork.
Place pork into slow cooker, cover and cook until tender enough to fork shred.
Remove pork, place on cutting board and shred into uniform pieces.
Remove onion/juice mixture from slow-cooker. Strain juice from onions and return them to slow cooker. Save liquid (optional).
Place shredded pork back into slow-cooker and add barbecue sauce
If you prefer pulled pork with less of a BBQ sauce taste, simply re-add some broth after shredding the pork. This will keep the pork moist.
Give guests a choice of BBQ sauces or the original cooking broth.
Offer a choice of rolls. We love Hawaiian bread.
Serve with coleslaw or potato salad.
