4K TV Broadcasts Have Arrived. Kind of.

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

4K TV Broadcasts get one step closer to reality

We’ve been talking a lot about Ultra High Definition TV, aka 4K TV, on the Abt Blog lately. The first UHDTV sets made their way into our showroom in the last few months and were met with quite a bit of excitement, with several already having been purchased. All possible superlatives have been used to describe the image quality; it’s been established that 4K video is out of this world.

But, as with any bleeding-edge technology, there’s been lots of talk about the downsides. Chief among the complaints is the glaring lack of readily available content, and how unlikely it is that we’ll see a 4K TV broadcast anytime soon. Well, it’s possible that you won’t have to wait as long as feared to watch the biggest football game in the world in glorious 4K.

Star Wars not to be released in 3D…Yet

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Star Wars’ Journey to theaters in 3D, put on hold.

star wars x wing fleet

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, or maybe just Hollywood a few days ago, there were rumblings of releasing the original classic Star Wars Trilogy in 3D.  Those plans however have been scrapped, for the time being.

With Writer/Director J.J. Abrams officially taking helm over the new Star Wars movies, Disney (remember, Disney owns Lucasfilm now) released a statement saying, “”Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans.” Disney also stated, “We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.”

So, unfortunately it’s going to be some time before you feel like reaching out to hug an Ewok or dodging a laser blast from an AT-AT Walker.  A bit of a disappointment for Star Wars aficionados everywhere, but the thought of new Star Wars movies being created helmed by a new voice and vision, softens the blow.

For now, look foward to a new Star Wars: Episode VII, which is still tentatively scheduled for a possible release in 2015.

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

If you’re buying a TV for the Super Bowl, Abt has something to fit every budget and space.

Super Bowl TVs

With a selection encompassing all sizes and price points, Abt has the right TV for your Super Bowl Party.

We probably don’t need to mention that The Super Bowl is mere days away. It’s a good bet that most of America will be tuning in, whether to watch a heroic battle between hotshot quarterbacks, the epic halftime show or dozens of legendary commercials. If you’ve been thinking of upgrading your TV set, there’s no better time than just before the Big Game. We had Steve P., one of our TV Sales Specialists, give us a run-down of some of the hottest TVs—at all sizes and price-points. So here’s our list of this year’s best Super Bowl TVs, whether you want to spend less than $500, or if money is no object.

Samsung PN43E450 43″ Plasma HDTV

The Samsung is our choice for entry-level flat panel TV especially suitable to sports fans. The 600hz subfield motion of the plasma panel displays video without the stuttering that occur when watching fast-motion on an LCD TV. The PN43E450 is a 720P TV, but At 43″ you won’t notice a difference. It’s big enough for a small football-viewing party, but still compact enough to fit in a small room, at a price so low you’ll think it’s a mistake. Call it the perfect dorm-room Super Bowl TV. Allstate Insurance Shares their tips on How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

Monday, January 28th, 2013

The following is a guest post from our friends at Allstate Insurance.  You can never be too careful when cooking in your kitchen.  Check out Allstate’s blog for the latest in insurance and life’s safety tips. Here are their tips to stay safe when making meals at home.

Prevent Kitchen Fire_Allstate

Cooking is an activity that brings together family and friends in the kitchen, the hub of the house. But if cooks aren’t careful, they may quickly discover the downside of a hot flame or oven. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires (one out of every three), according to the National Fire Protection Association. A long, billowy sleeve too close to a gas stove could singe, a hot frying pan with bubbling oil may ignite, or grease spilled in a hot oven could turn to flames when a cook steps away briefly to answer a door. But, safe cooking isn’t a tough recipe to follow. It just requires focus. Here are 10 key precautions to help prevent a kitchen fire:

Jenn-Air Culinary Center helps usher in new age of cooking

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

The cookbook has evolved from handwritten or printed collections of recipes into software programs, online forums, blogs or recipe apps for smartphones. Yet only one luxury appliance maker, Jenn-Air, has integrated an image-driven gourmet guide within the oven itself — adding interactivity so cooks can create perfect dishes with guidance for up to 50 food options, from meats and vegetables to breads and desserts.  On select Wall Ovens, the Jenn-Air Culinary Center is giving us a window into the new age of cooking.

jenn air touch control

It relies on dynamic touch-screen technology — the same as in the best smart-phones — to operate an innovative, image-enabled cooking guide. The oven’s 7-inch, glass screen features a touch-anywhere, full-color LCD display. More importantly, it brings into your kitchen the same instincts as a classically trained chef — instincts so refined it knows intuitively how to cook every dish to perfection.

We’re not yet done gushing about the cool stuff we’ve got on display from LG Electronics! Recently, we wrote about the two Ultra High Definition Televisions we have showcased in our Custom Audio/Video department. Abt is one of the few places in the country where you can see both of these technological marvels displayed in the same showroom. Sony reps stopped by for a pair of VIP Events earlier this month and last December, giving the public a chance to purchase or learn more about the Sony 84″ XBR-84X900 4K TV

Tomorrow, January 24th, it will be LG’s turn in the spotlight, as we host a VIP Event giving our customers the chance to experience the brilliance of the LG 84LM9600 Ultra High Definition TV. LG Laser TV: 100 Inches of Full HD Beauty

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

The LG Laser combines the picture size of a projector with the simplicity of a wall-mount LCD TV.

The LG Laser TV projector and screen, in use at the Abt Showroom.

CES 2013 may be over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy some of the exciting toys that the manufacturers showed off. Abt Electronics is proud to be the only retailer in the nation currently displaying the all-new LG Laser TV, dubbed the “Hecto.” Shipped straight to us from the convention in Las Vegas, the Hecto is an innovative system that combines an Ultra Short Throw (UST) projector and a special screen to create a theater-like viewing experience without the complexity of typical projector-based home theaters.

The screen of the LG Laser TV measures 100″ on the diagonal, making it larger than any wall-mountable TVs currently available. The projector unit is of comparable size to traditional projectors, but it can be placed as close as 22 inches from the screen. Since most projectors need 10 feet or more “throw distance,” the Hecto Laser Projector completely changes the support infrastructure needed for the average home theater. (more…)

The Connect Store Gets An Upgrade

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013
connect store

The Connect Store is in the progress of an upgrade.

If you’re a regular customer at our Glenview showroom, you probably know we like to keep things constantly changing around here. Recent visitors might have noticed construction going on in our computer boutique, the Connect Store, and some have expressed concern that we were removing it. I’m happy to inform everyone not to worry, and the truth is that we’re actually expanding and improving it.

The new Connect Store will have a completely remodeled design, with new lighting and display fixtures, all intended to give you the best computer shopping experience possible. The room will also be expanded to accommodate more showroom area and a brand-new, dedicated classroom area where our technicians can teach you the basics about your new computer.

We expect to have construction completed on the revamped Connect Store before the end of January. In the meantime, don’t let our construction keep you from computer shopping. Our computer sales specialists and all of their displays have been temporarily located to the main floor of the atrium, where you’ll still get the same great Abt Service.

3D Print A $300,000 burger? I’ll Take Two!

Monday, January 21st, 2013

delicious cheeseburger

3D printing is the newest technology to enhance the speed and accuracy of making precise 3D objects.  We’ve written about it before and it’s always been fascinating.  From creating personal toys, to helping major motion pictures speed up their production, 3D printing is poised to make its mark on the world.  What if, 3D printing can not only help create objects, but help create food?

Recently the BBC released a story about a start-up company called Modern Meadow that believes it can do just that- make artificial raw meat using a 3D bioprinter.   The article states, “[I]nstead of traditional ink or a material like plastic, the 3D printer cartridge contains something called bioink made of hundreds of thousands of live cells.  Once printed in the desired shape, the bioink particles naturally fuse to form living tissue.”

The time and cost are so incredible right now, that to develop a single burger with the material would cost an estimated $300,000.  An interesting concept, potentially leading to ending hunger, or developing a way to regenerate any tissue, including healing human tissue. The final results of the technology is far off, but who knows what the future knows. Until then, we will just have to make our own burgers, or visit our favorite fast-food chain.
