New Canadel Showroom Open at Abt

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

We unveiled our new Canadel showroom in our Atrium’s loft.  Canadel provides custom designs to fit anyone’s tastes.  A lot of what people find at other retail stores are as-is.  When it comes to Canadel, you can mix and match colors, sizes and other style designs that fit your desires.

Quality construction using birch solids and ply-wood veneers.  No particle board.  For those fans of keeping Green, Canadel gives back what they take by planting two new trees for every one they cut down and they do not waste any parts of the used tree.

Stop by Abt Electronics and come take a look at our Canadel products to find the perfect solution for your design needs.

Cardboard, The Best Toy Ever

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

How many times have you transformed a bunch of boxes into a fortress?  A spaceship? A hospital for stuffed animals?  We have thousands of products on our showroom floor that all came in potential tanks, boats, and castles, but our warehouse team can only build so many space stations. Imagination is an essence of childhood, of humanity really, and it was in that spirit that Abt recently donated some of our leftover appliance boxes to the Chicago Children’s Museum for its new exhibit – “Unboxed: Adventures in Cardboard,” which opened yesterday.

Man Creates Fire Breathing, Jet-Powered Dragon

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

As the news talks incessantly of the case of Apple vs. Samsung and “who copied who”, there are a handful of people who cherish the idea of new innovations.  Pittsburgh resident Richard Hamel was fascinated by the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” he decided to build a dragon all his own.

Originally a radio-control plane builder, Hamel decided to try and actually build a real life animatronic dragon that can even breathe fire.  With that little idea, he put it to the test and succeeded.  Hamel built a fully functioning dragon out of a JetCat P80 turbine.  One year and $8,000 later, the results are pretty amazing. It just goes to show what can be created with a little imagination and hard work.

The Digital Optimization of The Toothbrush

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Courtesy: BeamToothbrush.com

5,000 years ago civilizations used twigs to remove food from their teeth.  Eventually, the process evolved towards the modern toothbrush with materials such as bone, ivory, and animal bristles.  Fast-forward to Switzerland in 1954 and we have the world’s first electric toothbrush – the Broxodent.  Since then we’ve seen our defender of decay evolve with adaptations of new bristles, flexible handles, and even take on a portable, disposable, and chew-able form.  We have toothbrushes that sing to us, vibrate, rotate, and even clean themselves, but Beam saw the opportunity for more. Personal Energy Orb Arduino Makes You Earn Your Computer Time

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Are you one of those people who puts off exercising in favor of surfing the web, or playing on Facebook?  Well, the Personal Energy Orb is going to force your computer-loving self to get back into shape.  Developed by two students at the University of Munich for a physical computing course, the Personal Energy Orb connects to a bike-mounted revolution counter to note how far a user rides, counting the total distance toward usable time on a computer.

A fully “charged” green orb will allow a user to use their computer normally.  However, a used up, red orb will drag your computer’s cursor sensitivity settings to its lowest.  A great metaphor who like to sit on the computer for hours at a time, living a completely sluggish lifestyle.   The project’s creators say that the dragging in usage will lead to people enthusiastically hopping back on the bike to browse at a normal pace.  This seems like a great way to get people to try to exercise, or at least for brief periods, get their faces away from the computer monitor.

Check out the video below…then go run outside.
