Gunnar Optiks Digital Performance Eye Wear, Not Just For Gamers

Gunnar Optiks

Screens of all kinds play a part in our everyday lives, and according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, screen time should be limited to less than 2-hours per day.  Seems like kind of a silly (unrealistic) recommendation, as most modern careers require upwards of 8-10 hours of screen time per day (not counting personal time with video games and television).  An article in the New York Times   actually states that adults actually spend closer to eight-hours a day in front of some sort of screen – four-times of the recommended daily allowance.  Now, because we all like paychecks we really can’t afford to decrease our time in front of a screen, but by wearing a pair of Gunnar Optiks digital performance eye wear, you can lessen the strain on your eyes and reduce the long term effects of a life in front of a glowing monitor. Countdown to Summer Olympics in London

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

The Olympic Opening ceremonies are just around the corner.  Do you have what you need to experience every breathtaking moment as the world watches their most athletic representatives compete?  At Abt Electronics, we have exactly what you need to see every splash, hit and hear every shot and grunt made by these incredible athletes.   Consider the following when getting your TV ready to watch the Olympic Games.

Where are you going to sit?

When you watch the Olympics, you want to be in a perfect position.  You don’t want to be too close nor do you want to sit far away from the screen.  A basic rule you can use for finding the perfect position is to take the screen size, multiply it by 2, and then use that as the number of inches you should be away from the screen.  Make sure you take into account TV height too.  You may be sitting the right distance, but you don’t want the TV too high or too low as you can give yourself a pain in the neck.

Do you have the right connections?

You may have the perfect TV, the perfect cable or satellite box and you may be sitting the perfect distance to watch it all, but if you don’t have them connected properly, it will be all for naught.  Make sure your audio and video connections are done properly.  You want to make sure you have the most vibrant images as well as perfect sound quality coming from your speakers to fully immerse yourself in the games.

Calibrate and re-calibrate

The Olympic games are filled with ceremonies and other exciting moments.  Make sure your TV properly represents every color of the world’s flags by double checking your color calibration.  One way to prepare yourself is to find highlights from past games and compare them to the way your TV looks now.  Check your user manual on how to get to the calibration screen, as each manufacturer’s instructions are different.

Make sure your TV is well protected

It may seem like an afterthought, but protecting your TV is a great idea even well beyond the Olympics.  One of the easiest and most affordable ways to do this is with a surge protector.  A surge protector will help you in case of a power outage or any other electrical interference.  If you shiny new HDTV isn’t plugged into a surge protector and an accident happens, your TV is fried.

Abt’s dehumidifiers help you and your home recoup from soggy weather

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

If you’re from the Chicagoland area, you are familiar with the recent rainstorms we’ve been facing,.  After many weeks of vritually no rain, Mother Nature came back with a vengeance.  Home’s basements have been feeling the revirbirations and only recently have people finished getting rid of rain water in their homes.  While all the water may be gone, the damage can continue to get worse.  Protect your home with a dehumidifier from Abt.

A sump pump, a mop, or even a proper working drain can do a great job at eliminating water from your basement.  The problem is that any water that accumulates has the potential to seep into walls, flooring or even furniture.  No matter how hard you try to get rid of it, there will still be traces of water, which could lead to sogginess and ultimately, lead to mold.  Stop it where it starts with a good dehumidifier.  Check out Abt’s dehumidifier buying guide to find what’s right for you.

2012 Nissan 370Z’s Abt Makeover

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Our mobile installation department is at it again.  Taking a break from upgrading classic cars to Ferraris to Porsches, their next job is to supe up a Nissan 370z.  Over the course of the couple of days, Abt’s Mobile Installation department will be installing tinted windows, tinted tail lights, full hood and bumper clear bra.  Mobile installation is planning on adding more audio to the car, so they are looking to install an Alpine INES920HD radio, full JL Audio speakers/amps/sub.  For added convenience and safety there will also be rear and front cameras to aid in parking and pulling into tight spots.  There are a handful of other custom installation requests and our Mobile Installation department is willing to give it all the bells and whistles it needs.  Visit Abt’s blog soon to find out when we’ll have it on display.

Check out Abt’s Facebook page to see more pictures of the Nissan 370Z getting work done in Abt’s mobile installation department

The New iPhone 19-pin connector: What does this mean for accessories/docks?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

It was announced recently that iPhone 5, Apple’s next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will have a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the traditional 30-pin port.  According to a source from Apple, this move was to make room for the headphone plug to be moved to the bottom.

With a new way to connect your iPhone, that means the new phone will not connect with the huge market of accessories such as speakers and power chargers that form part of the ecosystem around iPods, iPads and iPhones, without having to purchase some kind of adapter.

3D Printing Begins to Invade Hollywood

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

About a year ago, we blogged about how Epson released a consumer friendly 3D printer that allowed you to print almost everything in 3D.  The options for what you want printed are potentially endless.  Hollywood seems to have agreed with the potential creative possibilities and is now releasing a movie that was made with 3D Printers: ParaNorman.

ParaNorman is the first stop-motion movie to use a 3-D color printer to create its puppets’ faces.  It’s also the first feature from Laika Entertainment since its Oscar-nominated 2009 hit Coraline. With tens of thousands of printed parts, millions of hours of work, and billions of pixels invested, the project represents an incredibly new and sophisticated way to create and design stop-motion animation.
