New App Makes Using A GPS A Bit Safer

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Wikitude is a new app that allows users to reap the benefits of a GPS on their phone, while still keeping an eye on the road.  Ordinarily, when you glance to see what direction you are going, you take your eyes off the road.  With Wikitude, your cell phone’s camera is used to stream live video of the road ahead while keeping up-to-the minute with where to turn and when.

A really neat feature on Wikitude is that it can search surrounding areas for geo-referenced content using the camera and the device’s sensors. The objects’ information is displayed in the cam right where the real object is located.

iPhone 5 for Sprint?

Monday, August 29th, 2011

One of the most talked about tech stories this year is, “what will the iPhone 5 look like?”  With that, comes a vast array of rumors, false reports on tech specs and stories of hopeful ideas.  Some are true, some are close, others are completely wrong.  One of the more interesting stories that seems to be true is that the iPhone 5 is coming to Sprint.

From the beginning, the iPhone was available through AT&T only.  Then, just last year, Verizon announced the good news and had a nice bump in their subscribers who were eager to enjoy Verizon services with an iPhone.  With the release of the iPhone 5, Sprint looks to be next in line. According to The Wall Street Journal, ” Citing the ever-popular “people familiar with the matter,” they say the carrier will be getting the iPhone 5 in mid-October.”  Will it come to Sprint? Only time will tell.

Abt’s Energy Solutions Center Tour

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

For anyone who has ever heard of Abt, or has even stepped into our store in Glenview, IL, it’s hard not to notice our dedication to helping the environment.  Abt hosted an energy solutions tour sponsored by Com Ed recently that informed customers of energy saving tips and were asked to fill out surveys explaining their daily energy uses.  A visitor to the tour even mentioned that they were convinced to do away with their old energy guzzling fridge and purchase an Energy Star efficient fridge.

We are pleased with the turnout and hope everyone was informed of some great energy saving tips.  Check out Abt’s Green Initiatives for more information.

Newly Redesigned Custom Audio Department

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Next time you step into Abt’s custom audio you will notice a few changes.  First off, you may think you are in a showroom in Vegas with our new 16×16 Planar Video Wall.  Located in the middle of our custom audio center, there are 16 46 LCD 1080p TVs  lined up to create the ultimate home theater experience you cannot find in any retail store.

The panel is controlled by a computer that can process each individual monito maintaining it’s full 1080p image.  What is interesting is that, through the computer, the monitors can be controlled as to what should be on the display.  As you can see above, our 4×4 has 4 separate TVs on top displaying 4 different products, while the 3×4 on the bottom is playing a movie on all 12 monitors.  A fantastic experience for both kids and adults.

Steve Jobs Retires from Apple

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Steve Jobs officially announced his retirement from his world renowned company Apple this week.  What does this mean for Apple?  Not much exactly.  It will still continue to be a Steve Jobs company.  Steve Jobs has been involved since its inception, but has taken numerous hiatuses the last several years due to illness.  In dealing with his absence, Apple worked on training a replacement who could eventually fill his place when Apple’s creator steps down.

This comes a little over a month before the big launch of the iPhone 5.  He will continue to be involved with the company but is relinquishing his CEO title to Tim Cook who was hired by Apple in 1998.  Jobs will continue to be involved in the company and will remain chairman of the board.  Watch Apple continue to evolve as an innovative company with the guidance of new individuals continuing Apple’s inexhaustible success.

Nintendo DS May Get an Upgrade

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

When the Nintendo 3DS launched earlier this year, its lack of two thumbsticks was cited by critics as a major flaw. Two thumbsticks, like those employed in traditional game controllers, typically allow for more appealing gameplay by offering users better control over characters. Nintendo is planning on moving forward and actually create a new Nintendo 3DS with an additional right joystick for easy playability.

Nintendo has hit a bump recently, reporting less than expected profits, but as always, they continue to reinvent themselves.  Be on the look out for new Nintendo products as well as alterations to their existing hand-held units.
