Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly? You May Need to Change Your Soap.

Friday, January 28th, 2011

If you aren’t familiar, 16 states, including our home state of Illinois, passed a law banning soaps with phosphates in hopes of eliminating environmental damages.  Phosphates are known to enhance the cleaning performance of dishwashers by breaking down food particles and leaving your kitchen items clean but they are also known to be a fertilizer for algae.  If an over abundance of algae makes it into the water systems, aquatic life can become endangered.

We recently have been receiving a large volume of calls from customers informing us that the dishwasher they purchased through us, hasn’t been cleaning their dishes as well as it used to.  Since the ban began in July of 2010, stores were allowed to sell their remaining soaps that carried phosphates until their inventory ran out.  Customers now are beginning to feel the effects.

In releases from several major appliance manufacturers, they have a list of changes that can be made to get your dishes back to being clean.  Options include such actions as place dirtier items towards the middle of the unit, load silverware handles down and change your cleaner to an all-in-one option.

For more information check out the official Phosphate Free Detergent News release.

iTunes Reaches 10 Billion

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Apple hit a HUGE milestone the other day: 10 billion iTunes downloads.  That’s a billion.  An incredible feat considering the company is only 10 years old.  Originally launched on January 9th 2001, reaching that milestone would mean about a billion songs were downloaded every year.

The 10 billionth download from iTunes was the song, “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash.  Not a bad song to reach that goal with.  You can be sure iTunes will continue to reach higher numbers of downloads as the year progresses.

Abt on NBC Chicago

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

While the result of this past weekend’s football game was less than thrilling for us in the Chicagoland area, a lot of the fun came from the build up. One of the exciting things came from planning a party. Josh Davis, made an appearance on NBC Morning News on Saturday to share some of his ideas for great things to have for your ultimate football party. While our Bear’s chances are dashed, all these items are still great to get for the upcoming Super Bowl in February.

Sub Zero & Control 4

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The high end appliance manufacturer, Sub-Zero is working with the company Control4 on incorporating their appliances in home automation.  Sub-Zero is hoping to allow consumers access to their appliances via keypads located throughout the house or via smartphone.  The system lacks full control of  dangerous appliances like the oven, but will act more like alerting system letting you know when your food is done being cooked.  It will grant complete access to things like your refrigerator or freezer.

It will be interesting to see if Sub-Zero continues to move forward with this type of system.  Who knows, maybe you can tweet your curious thoughts while looking for a midnight snack.

Abt Shows Off Their Football Team Devotion

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Here in the Chicagoland area, the Bears vs. Packers football game this weekend is our mini Super bowl.  As a special Friday event, we all were able to show off our loyalty to our favorite team.  It’s interesting to see a fellow co-worker show up in the opposing team’s colors.  Friendly wagers have been made and subtle jabs have been thrown around back and forth about who’s the best team.  It’ll be an exciting weekend!

No cheese was harmed in the making of this photo.

The 11th Annual Sundance Film Festival

Friday, January 21st, 2011

As you may or may not have already ascertained from my previous blog entries, I am a huge movie fan.  Huge.  So I’m pretty excited to follow this weekends events.  January 20-24th in Park City, Utah is the CES of movies; The 11th Annual Sundance Film festival 2011.  Four days of new, independent films presented by filmmakers, to other filmmakers, movie stars and cinema freaks alike.

This year is a bit different as Sundance brings news, reviews, and juicy tid bits to those who can’t make it out to Utah through a wide range of social media outlets.  Instant access through iPhone or Smartphone applications can provide news and reviews at the touch of a button.  If you are a lucky iPad owner, you can download the Sundance application and watch streaming movie trailers and even live interviews from on location.

Canon Camera, a sponsor of the festival will be showing their collaborative film called “The Story Behind the Still.”  It is a movie created with collaborative still images as well as HD video taken with their SLR camera by contestant winners.  “Shooting video on d-SLR cameras has become increasingly popular among filmmakers and enthusiasts. Nearly 20 percent of the overall 2011 Sundance Film Festival films were shot on HD d-SLR cameras.” (TWICE.com)

For full information, check out Sundance’s website.  Who knows what movies will be a success and hit mainstream theaters later this year.
