And The Winner Is…

Monday, August 30th, 2010

If you have a sweet tooth, then hopefully you were in attendance this past Saturday when we crowned the winner of the Abt/Electrolux Bake Off Contest.  The five finalists were on hand to wow the judges with their creations, and had some samples to hand out to other customers (if you didn’t get a chance to taste the recipes, you can always have one of our freshly, baked chocolate chip cookies that are available during the weekends).  We had the opportunity to sample Andrea’s Peppermint Chocolate Cake, Bill’s Chicago “Cub” Cakes, Renee’s Sweet Tart Squares, Nancy’s Turtle Cheesecake Lollipops and Audrey’s Pistachio Chocochews.

After much deliberation, our three judges chose Bill’s Chicago “Cub” Cakes as the overall winner!  I had a chance to interview Bill and was surprised that he created this recipe just for the contest.  Another surprise was finding out that he and his wife purchased their first appliances in 1978 from Jewel Abt, one of the founders of this company, and they have been loyal Abt customers ever since.  Bill  won an Electrolux dream kitchen, valued up to $7,999.  As an engineer, he appreciates that Electrolux creates is a “well engineered appliances.”

Congratulations Bill!  We can’t wait to see what recipes next year’s contest will bring out!

Focal Home Speakers Now At Abt

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Focal At Abt

I was listening to a pair of the Focal Chorus 726V floor standing speakers in the store the other day and almost forgot that I was listening to speakers. I had to learn more about them.

They sound great due to the technology that Focal has developed since their inception. All their speakers (even the ones for $495/pair) use drivers that are built by them for them, not some other companies’ parts. They also make their own cabinets unlike most companies. This allows them to know exactly what you will get with each speaker that leaves their factory. This translates into transparent speakers that almost disappear when listening.

Call an audio specialist at the store for more information or stop by and listen for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

What Is "Sous-Vide"?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Sous Vide at Abt

Do not let the complex sound of the word “sous-vide” scare you off. The French word for “under vacuum,” in the cooking world it means to slow-cook raw food for extended periods of time at low temperatures, but it is nothing like a “slow cooker”.

Simply put, sous-vide cooking employs the use of vacuum sealed plastic pouches, submerged in temperatures below the boiling point (usually between 104°F to 190°F), and kept for over 24 hours. This unique slow-cooking technique is used to marinate and cure foods by using pressure to steep flavors into foods with the vacuum packing process. The sous-vide cooking method cooks food evenly throughout; so boneless chicken breasts are silky; carrots are tender and sweet and retain their bright color; lamb is delivered smoothly textured, and evenly rare and flavorful with a subtle, light taste. Just clamp it on a stock pot or a large container and tough cuts of meat like beef chuck are transformed into meat as tender as a boneless steak cut from the tenderloin of beef.

Cooking with the sous-vide is a fool proof way of cooking, and it’s great for making large meals ahead of time to be stored in the freezer for future use. With the holidays right around the corner there is no better time to buy. Abt currently carries the PolyScience Sous Vide Cooking Kit and other accessories.  For more information, stop by our Gourmet Shop today.

Stream Music from Your Computer With Ease

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Audioengine W1 at Abt

People ask me all the time how can they transfer music from the computer without being complicated. Look no further than the Audioengine W1 wireless adapter. It is as simple as plugging it into your desktop or laptop computer.

Rather than using Bluetooth technology, this unit uses a locked 802.11 wifi network to connect your laptop to your receiver or speakers from up to 100 feet away. It can wireless send your mp3’s or favorite internet stations by just pressing play. You can also use this set up with your mobile phone, game system, Flat Screen TV, and CD/DVD player. I like to bundle this with Audioengine’s A5 premium powered bookshelf speakers for amazing sound that I can take anywhere in the house. They’re crisp, clear and have great definition.

For more information on the Audioengine line, please contact an Abt Sales Specialist today.

Do You Use Your Phone To Shop?

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Mobile Survey

According to Retail Customer Experience, 15% of consumers use their phone to make purchases.  This includes using their phone to verify product ability, competitively price items while at a store, and create shopping lists.  Out of the respondents, two thirds like the idea of self-scanning their items to avoid checkout lines, while one fourth of respondents would like to use their phones to get coupons and store specials.  The main complaints of using the mobile channel were internet connection problems, the cell phone’s screen size wasn’t large enough to compare products, and security issues.

Do you use your phone to shop? If yes, what are your reasons to do so and do you have any concerns?
