Hersey High School Students Tour Abt

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Friday, a group of 10 Hersey High School special education students, accompanied by three of their teachers, spent the day at Abt. They are participants in a career track program Hersey offers to students who plan to begin working right after graduation or attend a two-year, career oriented school.

On the minds of many of these students is the culinary program at Harper College. Many of the student participants currently take food classes at Harper in hopes of having a food service career after program completion. The students’ day at Abt began at Jolane’s where they got a tour of the restaurant, got to set a table for lunch service, and eat their choice of chopped salad, grilled cheese and fries, or mini burgers and fries. Three of the students even took orders and entered them into the computer, to get some experience at using a restaurant point of service computer.

Do You Have E-Waste?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Do you know what e-waste is or how to dispose of it? Well, like a lot of people, I thought that it was email, spam, and the like. I thought that it was easy to get rid of by hitting delete. I was wrong. E-waste is quite tangible and is causing huge disposal problems in many places all over the world. South Africa, China, and India are probably suffering the worst.

E-waste or electronic waste can be anything from old computer monitors, old cell phones, or basically any other unwanted electronic. China produces the world’s second largest amount of e-waste, the US produces the most. Unlike the US, China has a much less structured recycling method. So-called backstreet recyclers take the e-waste and melt it down for its valuable properties like gold and minerals. The downside, the methods the recyclers use to melt down the e-waste is highly toxic to the environment.

The UN Environment Programme met in Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday and discussed e-waste, among other environmental topics. At the meeting it was reported by 2020 China and South Africa’s waste from old computers alone could quadruple, in China the waste from old cell phones could increase seven-fold, and the cell phone waste from cell phones in India could be an astonishing 18 times higher.

Technology will keep moving ahead at a lightning speed. There will always be a newer and cooler gadget that will replace the last coolest and greatest gadget. As consumers, we need to be conscious how we dispose of the old technology and utilize responsible recycling methods.

Abt recognizes the necessity for responsible recycling. We have a recycling center on-site, and do our best to reduce our carbon footprint. “When we leave customer homes, they are greener than before we got there. We bring energy efficient appliances and electronics and recycle everything that we remove from the home,” said Bob Taylor, director of operations.

How do you reduce your carbon footprint? Send me your best recycling tips and I can post them before Earth Day!

Did You Know? Part 2

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Did you know that majority of cell phones have Bluetooth Technology? Kevin R., Abt internet sales specialist tells me, “That’s important in the state of Illinois because it’s illegal to talk on a phone while driving. You can have the phone on speakerphone but that isn’t really isn’t hands free when you’re holding the phone up to your chin.” This is true not only in Illinois, but also as more states begin to implement this law.

He also says, “You can use a Bluetooth capable phone for anything from sending friends funny pictures or the song that’s been stuck in my head all night. My favorite Bluetooth device is the Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD. I can fist pump in the gym wirelessly and if I get interrupted by a phone call during my set, I can answer the phone and pick up right where I left off. It has a built in microphone so I can answer the calls and catch my breath before I hit the iron again.”

“Bluetooth technology is a great addition to any iPhone, Blackberry, Palm or any other Smartphone you can’t go the day without,” according to Kevin. You can purchase Kevin’s favorite Bluetooth device, or chose from our wide range of Bluetooth devices at Abt or on Abt.com.

Did You Know? Part 1

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Have you jumped on the iPod bandwagon yet? If not, I found out some cool aspects of the Apple iPod Touch from internet sales specialist, Steve P.

Today he let me know that the iPod Touch can surf the internet using Wi-Fi—just like a Smartphone. The iPod Touch can also play thousands of songs and hours of video. It can download all of the same apps that iPhones run. For added convenience, the iPod Touch can also sync the Apple Email application with your email, so you can retrieve email from your mp3 player.

Do you use the iPod Touch? What are a few of your favorite things?

Abt Recycles and Aids Young Artists

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Photo Courtesy of St. John Brebeuf

Continuing the tradition from previous years, Abt donated a refrigerator box to St. John Brebeuf School in Niles.

The third graders at St. John use the box to paint a mural on. This year the kids based the mural on a book they read in class, The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner.

The story is about four orphaned children, living in a boxcar and hiding from their grandfather, who use an old refrigerator box to draw a beautiful picture on. The kids learn that their grandfather really loves them and takes care of them when he finds them.

Abt is proud to help!
