Energy Efficient Appliances

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

The new rules released by the Department of Energy last week state that manufacturers will have to increase the energy efficiency of most refrigerators by 25 percent starting in 2014.

The rules, which DOE is expected to finalize by year’s end, will reduce the energy use of a typical 20 cubic-foot top mount refrigerator to about 390 kilowatt hours (kwh) per year, down from about 900 kwh/year in 1990 and about 1,700 kwh/year in the early 1970s. (energy.gov)

The new rules are requiring manufacturers to also have ice-maker energy consumption information on the energy-use ratings to give consumers a more accurate gauge of energy consumption with each unit. Refrigerators are one of six categories including freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers and room air conditioners that were targeted for higher-efficiency standards.

So You Bought An Appliance. Now What?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

You’ve just taken possession of your new appliance. Congratulations! The first thing to do is find the warranty card, fill out the necessary information, mail it to the manufacturer. After all the time you spent picking which product you wanted, don’t you want to know how to get the best use out of it? Grab a cup of tea or a glass of soda and learn about all the wonderful things your new toy can do for you.

The appliances we use today are much more advanced than ones made years ago. There are water-saving features with dishwashers and washing machines, and “energy-saving” is the buzzword for refrigerators and cooking appliances.

Here are just a few helpful hints I’d like to share with you.

- Dishwashers and washers require less soap than your old units. The soap dispensers in dishwashers do not need to be filled all the way, and too much soap leaves a white powdery film.
- Using a rinse-aid in the dishwasher helps the dishes to dry faster, leaves less spots and is recommended by the manufacturer.
- If the washing machine says to use HE soap, purchase only that kind. It is created just for these machines and a very small amount is required. More doesn’t always mean better (it only applies to chocolate and sleep).
- If you’ve gotten a refrigerator, be advised that it takes up to 24 hours for it to “settle” and know that it’s in a new home. This would be a good time to remove any tape holding parts in place, because if you wait until later it may not come off and I speak from experience…years of experience.
- Since we’re talking about refrigerators, stainless steel seems to be popular with a lot of folks. The biggest problem (granted, it’s cosmetic) is fingerprints. We have a premium stainless steel cleaner that works like a charm on those handprints. It’s Eco-friendly, made by Bayes and is only $9.95. They also make Eco-friendly cleaners for glass, ceramic, enamel, granite, marble, natural stone surfaces, barbeque cleaner and protectant, wood and bamboo cleaner, and even leather upholstery. All these products are only $9.95 for 125-175L per bottle.
- If you need a special part, our Appliance Parts Department can order any part for your appliance.

    Refrigerator Buying Tips

    Refrigerators at Abt

Hello!  It’s Tim again and I’m back with more green tips for you!

Today, with the current heat level around here, I thought I’d talk about refridgerators.  After your HVAC system, your fridge uses the most energy of any appliance in your home.

When buying a new or replacement fridge, keep these things in mind:

    • Buy an energy star unit.  The slightly higher purchase price will be offset by your lower energy bill in the long run.
    • If you are in the process of planning product placement, keep the fridge away from heat registers and out of direct sunlight.
    • Look at a French door unit.  When the kids, or you, go to peruse the fridge for what you may want to eat, only having half of a door open lets less cold out than having a full door open.  This is one of the biggest benefits of a French door unit.  Plus they look great!

When using the fridge you should:

    • Plan on what you want before opening the fridge.  Standing with the door open quickly raises the temperature and makes your fridge work harder than needed.
    • Plan when putting your groceries away.  Separate which products go into the fridge or freezer.  Then, only open each door once to put it all away.  This is much better than opening a door for each individual item.
    • Keep the fridge at 36-38 degrees.  This is the sweet spot for energy efficiency.
    • Check the seal around the door.  Make sure it is in good condition, seals all the way around, and that nothing is keeping the door from closing all the way.
    • Let your leftovers cool on the counter before putting them in the fridge.  Putting hot food in the fridge is a sure way to increase your energy use.

With summer here, your fridge will get lots of use taking care of you by giving you cold drinks and ice to cool off.  Take care of your fridge by helping it to work as little as possible! For more information on choosing a fridge, view our Refrigerator Video Buying Guide.

    Stay green!

    Don’t Forget The Small Stuff

    Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

While Abt is normally the place that first comes to mind for large item purchases, such as appliances and televisions, don’t forget that we carry smaller, everyday essentials as well.

If you are going on vacation this summer, you may need an extra memory card or battery for your camera so you can capture all of the memories. We also carry cases for cameras & camcorders to protect and store those items on your trip.

For cell phones, we carry cases, car chargers, and Bluetooth headsets to make your day go smoother.

To protect your new laptop or netbook, we carry cases, mouses (mice!), and even blank cds/dvds for extra storage or to create a photo album of your latest adventure.

Do you need HDMI cables or a screen cleaner for that new big screen? We’ve got plenty of those as well.

And finally with appliances, we stock all the major manufacturers’ water filters for your refrigerator as well as specialty cleaners and surge protectors to protect those new appliances and televisions.

Remember that no matter if your need is large or small, Abt has it all.

My Latest Abt Purchase – The Maytag MFI2269SS Refrigerator

    Tuesday, July 6th, 2010
Receive up to $600 when you purchase select Maytag Appliances

Receive up to $600 when you purchase select Maytag Appliances

My name is Steve Pawlak and I want to talk about my most recent Abt purchase. I was in the market for an energy efficient, French door refirgerator with a water dispenser. Using our site, I easily found one that fit the bill.

The MFI2269SS is everything I wanted! Stainless steel, enery-efficient and a great price. The ice and water dispenser is awesome. Getting cold, filtered water whenever I want is very convenient, especially during the humid Chicago summer.

Right now, Maytag has a mail-in rebate of up to $600 when purchasing select Maytag appliances which ends this Saturday. So if you are looking for a new fridge or multiple products I would give them a look.

Abt Discusses Appliance Rebate Program on ABC7

    Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Monday morning, ABC 7 News visited Abt to discuss the stimulus program for appliances, beginning Friday. Illinois received $12 million for Energy Star qualifying hot water heaters, central air conditioners, furnaces, and appliances.

The rebate began for hot water heaters, central air conditioners, and furnaces on January 31st of this year. Half of the stimulus money has already been doled out.

Beginning this Friday, April 16, any in-store purchase of Energy Star qualified clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, and room air conditioners from participating retailers will be eligible for a rebate. The rebate program ends April 25th or when the funds run out.

The Illinois government has imposed a cap on the rebate program. A maximum rebate of $400 per appliance will be allowed. Prior to the new rebate cap, 15% of the cost of the appliance was going to be reimbursed. The change will enable more people to participate in the program and the funding will reach more participants. This will ensure that high-end appliance purchases will not deplete the funds too quickly.

There are a couple of ways to participate in the rebate program. You will automatically receive your rebate on Energy Star qualifying appliances at the point-of-purchase. There is an additional $75 mail-in-rebate exists for those who opt to recycle old refrigerators and freezers.

The recycling rebate must be filled out and mailed in. Those who elect to recycle their old refrigerators and freezers will pay the $29-$49 Abt fee and then they will receive the $75 after the rebate is processed.

Abt Recycles and Aids Young Artists

Photo Courtesy of St. John Brebeuf

Continuing the tradition from previous years, Abt donated a refrigerator box to St. John Brebeuf School in Niles.

The third graders at St. John use the box to paint a mural on. This year the kids based the mural on a book they read in class, The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner.

The story is about four orphaned children, living in a boxcar and hiding from their grandfather, who use an old refrigerator box to draw a beautiful picture on. The kids learn that their grandfather really loves them and takes care of them when he finds them.

    Abt is proud to help!
