Microsoft wants “Office” to run on iOS & Android

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

CNET is reporting that Microsoft in planning on creating Office apps that will run natively on iOS and Android will finally launch early next year.  In a statement to CNET , Microsoft said that “Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS, and we have nothing additional to announce today about retail availability of the new Office.”

This is an interesting development in the world of smartphones as Microsoft attempts to reach across the aisle with their competition.  Having already created a line of “Windows Phones“, Microsoft is looking to expand to other operating systems.   Would you use Microsoft Office on your Android or iPhone?

One of the most popular questions posed when I was on the sales floor was “does it have Microsoft Office?” referring to the iPad of course. I always had to tell them no but they could find similar replacements yet, customers were never satisfied because they wanted their Office! I have good news – a report from The Daily today says that we will see Microsoft launch Office for the iPad on Nov. 10.

Back To School At Abt

It’s that time of year again, summer is winding down and the return of the school year is just around the corner.  All students know to have the essentials ready: a backpack, writing supplies, and books.  But there’s one school supply everyone loves to have: a new computer.  Here at Abt Electronics we have a large supply of laptops, desktops and computer accessories in our Connect store.  To make shopping a bit easier for you, we’ve narrowed down the best of the best.

Laptop: Boasting a 16” TrueBrite HD screen, the Toshiba model A665S6056 is our favorite laptop.  With a Dual-Core processor, this computer allows you to multi-task with ease.  Other features include a web-cam built in the monitor, a CD/DVD reader/burner and an HDMI port for easy connectivity to TVs and monitors. For those eco-conscious students, it’s Energy Star compliant and will adjust settings automatically getting the most out of your power consumption.

Desktop: If you plan on doing most of your work in a dorm or an office, you may want to invest in a desktop computer.  For our selection, we prefer the Hewlett Packard Pavilion Elite HPE210F.  With a powerful 3GZ AMD Phenom quad-core processor, 8 GB of RAM, 1 Terabyte of memory, Blu-ray player and an impressive 512 MB ATI Radeon HD graphics card, you can multi task your work while blasting away aliens or watching your favorite movie.

Software: The most popular computer software is Microsoft Office: Home and Student.  This software has everything a student needs: Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Entourage.  All are important tools for writing documents, keeping spreadsheets and creating presentations.

Accessories: Our salespeople couldn’t come to an agreement on just one favorite accessory, which is why they settled on both the Kenneth Cole laptop bags and any size External Hard Drive.  We carry a wide selection of fashionable Kenneth Cole laptop cases for students to protect their investment.  The external hard drives are also an important accessory when it comes to backing up important documents, projects and even keeping a library of music safe and secure.

For more information on our favorites or, to ask about our entire line of computers and accessories, call us at 888-288-5800.

Microsoft Office 2010, Available now at Abt

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 came out today. It has been three and a quarter years since the last Microsoft Office Suite has been released. For $149-$499 you can upgrade to Office 2010.

Because Office 2010 is so new, I don’t know much about it yet or have many tech specs on it. As of now, it is rumored to be very similar to Office 2007.

If you recently purchased the previous version of office (March 5, 2010 and September 30, 2010), then you are eligible for an upgrade at no additional cost. To receive your upgrade, go to

Check back for more information on the latest Microsoft Office Suites available at Abt.

Free Word, Excel & Photoshop Workshops at Abt

Monday, July 20th, 2009

At Abt, we believe that customers are happier with their purchases when they know how to use them. Back in 1988, we began hosting classes for customers to explain basic usage and show tips and tricks to owning their products. All classes are free and take place in our Glenview retail store in the Apple Boutique. In addition to our sales staff taught electronic classes, we have teamed up with Directions Training to provide Microsoft Office classes.

For a limited time, join Directions professional trainers in these Abt exclusive word, excel and photoshop workshops. All are welcome to attend any and/or all free workshops. The classes will take you through a guided tour of each program and introduce to you some of the many capabilities each program offers. For each class, you will have the opportunity to learn either the Mac or the PC version of the software. Think you already know how to write a document in MS Word? Do you use Excel every day and think you know enough? Ready to step up your photo editing skills? Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of the program, know the basics, or never used them before, these classes may just bring about some key tricks and tips that can make your business, school or personal computing more productive.

With four Illinois locations and over 10 national facilities, Directions trainers can take you to the next level. Certified by Microsoft and the Illinois State Board of Education, Directions can offer you training that can advance your career, earn continuing education credits and even be issued technical certifications from top computing vendors like Microsoft, IBM & Cisco.

The free workshops are available to the public and do not require any signing up or qualifying purchases. We welcome you to visit the Apple Boutique inside Abt Electronics where our seminar room will be hosting these three Abt exclusive events. For more information on Abt’s electronic classes click here.
