Jon Abt Interview Featured in Hub Magazine

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The Hub Magazine wrote a segment in their April issue titled, “Trading Places: Retail is Where Cyberspace Meets the Marketplace”.  In it, they discuss with several retail CEO’s where they draw their inspiration and what they see as a positive way to run retail, but online and in stores.  Jon Abt after being asked what is a best kept secret of retail, he repsonded, “Keeping it simple, focusing on the customer and listening to them is a secret of great retail. On the back end, the secret is empowering your employees to take care of customers without having to ask a supervisor. That’s what’s worked for us for the last 75 years.”

The Good Guys Visit Abt Electronics

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Australian electronics and appliance chain “The Good Guys” made a trip to Abt Electronics all the way from down under to experience American retail practices.  Sales representative Joe Klett took them on a tour of our store’s showroom and warehouse, going over our history.  After, owner Jon Abt fielded questions and further explained how we handle our large volume of products and customer requests.

Peter Sinondinos, the General Manager of Retail Operations mentioned, “Our CEO Michael Ford is a man of few words but summed it up in one for you guys- “excellent”.  I had twenty two Australians talking about it today. They couldn’t find enough adjectives to describe the store. They were quietly impressed.

It was a real pleasure to see the nice people from “the Good Guys”.  They’ll no doubt go back to Australia with a list of new things on how a successful business is run, the American way.

Abt Post Sales Specialties

Abt Electronics was featured in a recent article on WarrantyWeek.com.  We here at Abt are known for our great selection and award winning customer service, but what a lot of people don’t know is that our service, extends post sale.  When it comes to servicing our electronics and appliances we are with our customers every step of the way.  If you are from the Chicagoland area we service our own products with our own professional service team.  If you are buying outside the Chicagoland area, service contracts covering Abt purchases are sold by SquareTrade, and service calls are handled by SquareTrade’s call center.  Our mutual business ethics with SquareTrade allow our customers to trust us with their investments and our services.

Lights, Camera, and Bold Chat

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Abt’s employees work 24 hours a day to keep day-to-day operations running at the high standards set by generations of the Abt family. Most day employees arrive between 3-9am, although employees come and go all day and night long.

Thursday began like most, with one major exception, at 8:30am Ross Haskell, the director of marketing at Bold Software, and a production crew came in to spend the day taping a video for the Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition (IRCE) 2010.

The IRCE is a conference where internet retailers convene to learn from each other over a four-day period each June. This year both Jon Abt and Ross Haskell will be speaking for a conference session to discuss software that has become a lifeline of our customer’s internet retail experience. Bold Software created BoldChat, a technology responsible for giving our customers the ability to speak with a customer service or sales specialists live on-line regarding anything from product specs to tracking info to sales quotes.

BoldChat is a managed communication tool, which provides customers live human contact over the internet, in the form of a chat, which is similar to texing or emailing with the instant gratification of an immediate expert response from Abt’s highly-trained staff.

In a world full of automation, customers appreciate the person-to-person contact attainable because of BoldChat sessions. Abt has grown into the largest single-store retailer in the country, thanks to uncompromised values like customer service, as seen in the store’s motto, “The answer is always yes to any reasonable request.” BoldChat gives Abt another outlet to serve customers in every aspect of the sales process.

During the long day of filming, Jon Abt along with customers, and staff did interviews about their experience using BoldChat. The consensus was BoldChat has become a tool that Abt can’t live without. Customers appreciate the versatility of being able to speak with a sales or customer service specialist while multi-tasking. It is so flexible that consumers in every demographic can use BoldChat.
Customers are parents, students, at work, or just have so much going on that they don’t have time to be on the phone. The overwhelming customer response to the question, “what do you like most about BoldChat?” was the ability to pose a question and walk away from the computer, knowing upon their return, an expert response would be waiting for them.

customer service personnel can answer questions and include links to products, shipper’s websites, or even spec sheets on a manufacturer website. The best feature of Bold-Chatting, according to our staff, is their ability to provide unparalleled customer service and assist multiple customers at the same time.

Jon, Abt’s co-president, is hands on with the internet sales division of Abt. He is always willing to jump in and assist sales or customer service staff with answering phones and questions on BoldChat. The internet division of Abt sales has been around for 13 years. Since 1999, BoldChat has been an essential component of our service. Jon believes that BoldChat is an enhancement that has made it even easier than ever before to get answers to questions, as simple or complex as they may be.

Abt’s staff, who utilize BoldChat daily, believe that the ways to assist customers seem endless. Just about any questions a customer could ask on the phone, staff can easily answer over on a BoldChat. Both sales and

Constantly changing to meet our customer’s ever-evolving needs is a top priority and thanks to BoldChat, we are able to help customers in yet another effective and personal way. At Abt, customer needs come first, and thanks to BoldChat we can offer even better customer service than ever before!

And the Award Went to….Abt Electronics

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

The Abt family is constantly asked why their business thrives; what’s their secret to success? Most simply, they hold true to the values passed down from their parents and grandparents. Jewel and David Abt taught future generations to relish change, keep the store uniquely exciting, and take care of customers.

After being nominated for a U.S. Global Innovator Award (gia), by Peter Giannetti, of Home World Business Magazine (HWBM), Abt was honored as a gia winner on March 14th. The awards dinner was at the Hotel Intercontinental in Chicago. Ricky Abt and Joe Klett attended to accept the award. It is the Abt Family’s commitment to Jewel and Dave’s advice that helped win this award.

Home World Business magazine showcased Abt and their Global Innovator Award in the March 14th issue. Abt’s unique 358,000 square foot facility, Atrium, and business practices were also highlighted.

Robert (Bob) Abt, CEO, was the visionary behind Abt’s unique showroom. Keeping the store unique and exciting was at the forefront of his design concept. Bob is “a student of the Steve Wynn school of visual merchandising, and he readily admits the iconic Las Vegas casino innovator was his biggest inspiration,” Peter Giannetti reported in the March 14th issue of HWBM.

The Bellagio was Bob’s design influence for the Atrium; which some compare to a mall. At the center of the Atrium is a fountain and surrounding the fountain’s dancing waters is a series of kitchen vignettes and boutique stores. The Abt family wants their customers to have a unique shopping experience. The Atrium provides a comfortable environment and entertainment for the whole family.

Looking past the esthetics of the store, Abt thrives, thanks to unmatched customer service and the green initiatives. The recycling center, using a co-generator, and selling environmentally friendly electronics and appliances have helped to reduce Abt’s carbon footprint.

Abt is still family owned and managed by Bob and his four sons, Mike, Jon, Ricky, and Billy. There is always an Abt family member at the store, Jewel and Dave’s vision is achieved everyday.

Taking care of customers by providing unparalleled service pre- and post-sale service is a number one priority, as seen in the customer service motto posted throughout the store, “The Answer is Always Yes to any Reasonable Request.”

Abt has been growing and changing with customers since 1936; Abt will continue to do so as long as there are appliances and electronics in the home.

The Institute of Packaging Professionals visits Abt

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Tuesday evening, the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), Chicago Chapter, toured Abt. The IoPP is a group, “dedicated to creating networking and educational opportunities that help packaging professionals succeed” (IoPP, 2010).

I spoke with Craig Jarvis, Senior Packaging Engineer at Pactiv, about what this group hopes to learn at Abt. He wanted to see “what we offer the industry along with getting a good feel for our inner workings.” Jarvis told me, “I’ve always wanted to stop in the store; it’s very unique.”

The IoPP began their tour in the Sony store with a talk from Jon Abt. He spoke about Abt’s history and about the business today. When Jon concluded the group went through our 300,000 square foot warehouse to the co-generator room, our on-site recycling center, and concluded their visit at Jolane’s Café.

Abt is proud to host businesses, educational, and leisure groups for tours. For more information on an Abt tour, contact Cari Boyk in customer service for more details.

Sonos Co-Founder Visits Abt

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Today, Abt had some special visitors. The co-founder of Sonos, Tom Cullen, and Sonos’ senor public relations manager, Tom Meyer, came to see the store, meet with Jon (Abt) and discuss their products.

Their first stop was in Abt’s Apple Store, home to the Sonos ZPS 5 Zone player. It’s got two tweeters, two 3” mid-range drivers, and a 3.5” woofer. The ZPS 5 can stream music from internet radio stations like Pandora and Last FM, in addition to playing your iTunes library.

One of the coolest features of the ZPS 5 is its iPhone and iTouch compatibility. With a free, downloadable app from Apple, you can control your Zone player with the technology you already have in your pocket. Tom Meyer explains, “iPhone is in your pocket, owning an iPhone or iTouch eliminates the cost of buying a remote.”

For more information on the Sonos ZPS 5 Zone Player or any Sonos product contact an Abt sales specialist on the phone or in the showroom.

Entrepreneurs Took Over Abt Thursday Night

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Thursday night, Abt was filled with almost 100 business people from the Chicago chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. The group toured Abt’s facility, snacked on food and beverages catered by Jolane’s Café, and went on a green tour lead by Mike Abt, who showed how such a large business can be good for the environment too. During the questions and answers segment, Jon Abt discussed the history of Abt Electronics and how it became the “Triple Threat” in the consumer electronics industry with its price, service, and experience. The Abt family gave inspirational examples of how they built Abt from the ground up and wanted to share their success with other local entrepreneurs.

Abt and the Pink Heals Tour–One Night Only

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Life Source, the Glenview Fire Department, and Abt are teaming up to beat cancer by bringing the Pink Heals Tour to our Parking lot today between 6 and 10 p.m. This cross country tour has been raising money and taking blood donations to support women and all patients with cancer.

All registered donors for the event will be entered in a raffle and receive a commemorative T-shirt in honor of the event. Steve Shapiro, K.C. Carr, and Cari Boyk will be representing Abt at the event and handing out pink ribbon stress balls.

As Steve and I were discussing the Life Source-Abt partnership, he said that we were proud to team up with the largest blood center in Illinois. We have had a long standing relationship with them doing other promotions in the past. Tonight before the tour leaves, Life Source will present Jon Abt with a plaque to thank Abt for its partnership with the Pink Heals Tour.

After donating blood for a worthy cause, visit the Abt Design Center. To support the Pink Heals Tour, all of the stores will have special promotions such as Jolane’s two-for-one dinner options.
