The Institute of Packaging Professionals visits Abt

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Tuesday evening, the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), Chicago Chapter, toured Abt. The IoPP is a group, “dedicated to creating networking and educational opportunities that help packaging professionals succeed” (IoPP, 2010).

I spoke with Craig Jarvis, Senior Packaging Engineer at Pactiv, about what this group hopes to learn at Abt. He wanted to see “what we offer the industry along with getting a good feel for our inner workings.” Jarvis told me, “I’ve always wanted to stop in the store; it’s very unique.”

The IoPP began their tour in the Sony store with a talk from Jon Abt. He spoke about Abt’s history and about the business today. When Jon concluded the group went through our 300,000 square foot warehouse to the co-generator room, our on-site recycling center, and concluded their visit at Jolane’s Café.

Abt is proud to host businesses, educational, and leisure groups for tours. For more information on an Abt tour, contact Cari Boyk in customer service for more details.

Hersey High School Students Tour Abt

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Friday, a group of 10 Hersey High School special education students, accompanied by three of their teachers, spent the day at Abt. They are participants in a career track program Hersey offers to students who plan to begin working right after graduation or attend a two-year, career oriented school.

On the minds of many of these students is the culinary program at Harper College. Many of the student participants currently take food classes at Harper in hopes of having a food service career after program completion. The students’ day at Abt began at Jolane’s where they got a tour of the restaurant, got to set a table for lunch service, and eat their choice of chopped salad, grilled cheese and fries, or mini burgers and fries. Three of the students even took orders and entered them into the computer, to get some experience at using a restaurant point of service computer.

Johnny Collante, Chef de Cuisine, prepares a delicious range of food from chicken pot pie to rack of lamb for any appetite.

Did you know that you can book Jolane’s for private events like showers, dinners, and parties? Contact Ethan, manager of Jolane’s Café, for more information on rates and menu options.
