A New Way to Watch and Record Birds…Or Be A Super Saavy Spy

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Binoculars.  They’ve been around for years and have helped the common man see things from great distances, or even watch individuals from afar without being discovered.  Sony unveiled their new line of hybrid binoculars that not only give users a glimpse into the beyond, but they can now also record it.  The unusual combo product will capture both high-definition full-motion video and high resolution still images in 2D or 3D formats.

The ability to record what you see though your binoculars? This definitely would have come in handy for Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcok’s Rear Window.

CES 2011: Samsung Flexes Its Techno Know How

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Some real amazing stuff from Samsung at CES 2011 have been found.  First, is  Samsung’s ultra thin 75 inch LED Smart HDTV.  The TV, like other Smart TVs will support internet connectivity, apps, 3D content and playback.  It is also power efficient due to LED backlighting and more.

And when we say thin, we mean THIN.

It looks like an upright, glass tube from this angle.  Also at Samsung’s booth is their display for Google TV.

Sony is no longer the only manufacturer to have Google TV options.  Samsung will be releasing two versions of their Google TV boxes.  One a regular stand-alone box and the other will have add on Blu-ray capability. Also, they’ll come with special Google TV remotes that include QWERTY keyboards and voice search capabilities operated by an internal microphone.

Abt's New Bose Room

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Abt is pleased to announce the opening of the new Bose® room in our audio/video department. Like many of the trusted brands featured in our store, Abt has worked closely together with Bose for many years to create a tremendous shopping experience. This new Bose® area in our store does just that!

The new room features 20 Bose home theater and personal audio products on display, including the newest Lifestyle® home entertainment systems, the simpler 2.1 CineMate® home theater speaker systems, the SoundDock® family of products for iPods® and iPhones®, the Companion® line of computer speakers, and the brand new Bose IE2 and AE2 audio headphones.

Automated displays throughout the space allow Abt customers to explore independently, listen to music and movie demonstrations, and discover more about the product benefits – all with the simple push of a button. The room also allows for more personalized demonstrations with an Abt sales consultant in warm, home-like settings that combine the latest HDTVs, Bose systems, a variety of HD sources, and comfy leather seating.

A great product on display that I had the pleasure of trying out is Bose®’s new Lifestyle® V35 home entertainment system.  Continuing the tradition of Bose®’s popular Lifestyle® systems, the V35 connects up to 6 HD components and upscales any non-HD video to 1080p! I was very impressed with its Unify™ technology system that easily guides any user while installing the unit to existing components.  Even a novice would be able to set this up!

For more information, stop by Abt and take a tour of our newest remodel.  Don’t forget to also check our full line of Bose® products .

Streaming Blu-ray on Netflix? Not This Year.

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Neflix began streaming movies in May of 2008. They expanded to streaming on gaming systems like XBOX and then to an independent box, made just for streaming video. Could it get any better than that?  It did.  Netflix currently streams on game systems like Xbox360 & Sony’s PS3, as well as higher end television sets from Sony and LG, and blu-ray players from Sony, Samsung, and LG.

Netflix is aiming to release a Netflix option with surround sound with Blu-ray video, but will probably not be during the 2010 calendar year. Thank goodness for the Netflix Blu-ray option….

Vudu, on the other hand, does have quite a few hi-def options. They have more choices available in high definition and higher quality formats. Vudu’s technology works in select product from LG (blu-ray), Mitsubishi (HDTVs), and will be coming soon to select products from Samsung, Toshiba and Sharp.

Currently, there’s no word on the possible release of Netflix streaming with surround. We’ll keep you posted. CNET notes that 5.1 surround sound will be available for their instant watching product in 2010. No word on when 1080p video will be available, but we would assume they are working on that next.

Would you stay loyal to Netflix or switch to Vudu because they have more HD options?

Come See Full HD 3D at Abt Today

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Come to the Panasonic Full HD 3D demonstration in Abt Electronics’ parking lot until 3PM today!!! One of the three Panasonic trucks, currently traveling the country, is in front of the store and will be demonstrating the new HD 3D technology. Previously, 3D had a maximum resolution of 480p and TV can go up to a resolution of 1080p. Now, Panasonic has improved that resolution to 1080p in each eye—that’s 4X better than anything else available on the market.

To demonstrate the new HD 3D images Panasonic took special footage of the Olympics, and a movie trailer. There are specific processors dedicated to each eye because the HD 3D images are shot separately for each eye. Although the footage was shot at the same time, one camera takes the vertical and one camera takes the horizontal footage.

The prototype glasses that are necessary to view the improved technology have a special computer chip-sensor over the bridge of the nose. The sensor picks up signals emitted from dedicated processors on the sides of the 103” plasma (inside the air-conditioned truck). Each eye receives 240 images per second. The sensors on the glasses receive signals from long-range (movie theater-type) processors (on the sides of the TV). At points during the demonstration, covering the receiver on the glasses with your finger may be necessary to avoid a blurry image.

Because this is a demonstration of prototypes, the Panasonic representatives made sure to let us know that when the HD 3D home kit becomes available it will be modified slightly. The glasses will change, the Blu-ray player will be able to play regular Blu-ray discs as well as the 3D type, and the plasma that will be part of the kit will come with the 3D emitter.

The actual HD 3D footage was really cool! While watching the video from Vancouver—site of the 2010 Olympics—skiers swooshed down mountains and it looked like snow really flew at the audience. Another outstanding moment of the video was during a video of the Grand Canyon. Water rushing through the canyon spashed on the camera lens and for a second I wanted to wipe my eyes—it was pretty realistic.

Abt is this Panasonic truck’s second stop—it’s going to Los Angeles when it leaves Glenview. It’s going travel the country for eight months and making about 3-4 stops a week.
