Friday, August 24th, 2012

If you are familiar with Abt, you may already know about our great customer service, and excellent selection of appliances and electronics.  What you may not know is how Abt is continually involved in activities and installations that try to make the earth a better place to live.  Recently, we installed a Wind Spire at a dog park in Cary, IL.  The dog park was installed with various environmentally saving strategies to leave a small carbon foot print.  To read more about Abt’s efforts, visit Abt’s Green Program.

Abt Harnesses the Power of Wind

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

If you’re from the area, next time you are driving down Milwaukee Ave, take a look at our new wind turbine, developed by Windspire, right outside our building.  Constructed and erected on October 28th, the new 30 foot, vertical  turbine is designed to create clean, renewable energy for our facility.

Windspire has been working with companies, schools and even government locations to provide their specially designed wind turbines as an option for cleaner energy.

“We wanted something that would not only work, but would work in Chicago weather” said Bob Taylor, Abt’s Director of Operations.  Chicago’s known as the Windy City, and its average wind speed of about 12 mph is perfect for the operation of the turbine.

This is just another part of Abt’s long line of environmentally friendly movements that have been established inside and outside the store.  You can find more about Abt’s environmental efforts on our Going Green page.

For more images of the Windspire installation check out our Facebook page.  We are a proud retailer of this product because of its benefit to the environment, so to see if a Windspire wind turbine is right for you, call us at 888-228-5800.

Behind the Bolt: Mike Abt Goes Green

Monday, October 18th, 2010

“This is my religion…My goal is to get other businesses to be green,” the dedicated words spoken by Mike Abt, our Vice President, who has spearheaded the earth-friendly changes at Abt Electronics.  The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has released a comprehensive plan to help the counties and communities of the Chicagoland area to sustain resources and prosperity through mid-century and beyond.

A special “Portraits” section on CMAP’s website, profiles Mike and his efforts going back almost 20 years, when he began convincing his family and friends to take little steps to recycle.  He has continued to apply his unbreakable environmental habits even to the workplace.

Some of the waste reducing practices involved are the elimination of paper catalogues.  Most business is done through our web marketing.  A recycling center located just south of the main store opened 2 years ago and saves 3.5 million pounds of cardboard and paper from going to the local dump, over 240,000 pounds of Styrofoam from going to the landfill, and over 13 million pounds of appliances and electronics from ending up in a landfill each year.

“The best part about a family business is that if anyone thinks of an idea, we can implement it right away,” Mike says.  His own personal ideas have even led to the availability of numerous bicycles for employees to use whenever they want to leave the work grounds for lunch or even exercise.

Day after day, Mike continuously feels better in his efforts and strives to find new ways for the company to lessen their carbon footprint, which he believes will help leave this world beautiful and healthy for generations to come.
