Being Green: What Can You Do?

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Earlier this week, we talked about some of the technologies and practices that Abt has implemented in our business which help us be green on a day-to-day basis. And while it might not be feasible for individual homeowners to cover their roof in solar panels, there are still plenty of tactics that each of us can practice to help 2ease our impact on the environment. We’ve all heard of the 3 R’s of being environmentally-friendly: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These are some of the simplest ways we can work to better the environment, so here are some ways each of us can fit the 3 R’s into our daily lives.

Recycle

Most of us live in cities with municipal recycling programs. We take our cans, plastic bottles and paper products and drop them in a bin at the end of our driveway every week, and they’re hauled away and recycled, which keeps about 89 million tons of waste out of landfills. But it’s not always as easy to recycle other, larger items—your TV, cell phones, old light bulbs—which can be toxic to the earth.

In 2010, around 2.4 million tons of electronic waste was disposed of, with only 27% of it being properly recycled. Products that end up in landfills will eventually release hazardous substances like mercury, lead, and PCBs into the ground, which can contaminate our crops and water sources. In an era when we’re all constantly upgrading our gadgets, it’s increasingly important that our old devices get recycled properly. Thankfully, there are centers across the country that make it easy to drop off your old e-waste for safe recycling. Can’t make it out to Abt to recycle your old appliances, electronics, or other devices? Visit RecycleNation to search for your nearest recycling facility. Their recycling finder is also a great way to discover all of the other items you can recycle, including things you may never have thought of.

Earth Day is Every Day

Monday, April 17th, 2017

This Saturday is Earth Day, a day to celebrate the environment and explore ways that we can all do more for the earth. And though Earth Day is only a single day on the calendar, we believe it’s a way of thinking worth implementing wherever possible in your everyday life. One of the main tenets of Abt’s overall philosophy is a strong commitment to the environment. In every part of the business, our impact on the environment is weighed and we always attempt to make the decision that’s friendliest to the earth. Those choices are reflected throughout the business, from the infrastructure of our store to the services we provide our customers. In celebration of Earth Day, here’s a look at some of the ways we strive to be green every day.

Panasonic Wows at CES 2011

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

If you just happen to have a love for plasma TVs and say, ohh, about $150k you want to spend, Panasonic has got one for you.  At CES 2011 they showed off their new product; a 152 inch Plasma TV.  Located right in the middle in the image below…

With the tablet market booming, Panasonic has one to call their own.  The Panasonic Viera Tablet runs on Android and comes in two sizes: a 7 inch or a 10 inch model.  An interesting feature it has, is its compatibility with HDTVs.  This tablet will be able to transfer information both to and from your television.  The tablet can also double as a remote for controlling your home theater system. Not to mention check your e-mail, watch internet TV, receive sports, news and stock updates, become an e-reader, surf the net…etc.

In the same area, our very own Mike Abt sat down with Panasonic and spoke to the audience about our eco friendly practices.  To learn more about us going green check out our Green program initiatives.

NBC Chicago is Green With Abt

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Abt’s ongoing green efforts are showcased on NBC Chicago’s article, “Is It Possible to Live Off the Electrical Grid?”.   If you are a frequent visitor to our blog, you are well aware of our efforts to make this world a little greener. Most recently we installed a Windspire in the front of our store.

Every day our 350,000 plus square foot complex is powered from the hours of 9 am- 6 pm by two engines that run on natural gas. “If you were producing more power than you were using, your meter would actually spin backwards,” says Bob Taylor, our Director of Operations. Adding energy “back into the grid” is what happens when the system generates so much power.

If you are from the Chicagoland area and are  interested at all in adding solar panels to your business or home, or even adding a Windspire to create your own energy, give us a call at 847-967-8830 . For full information on our efforts visit our Going Green page.
