Abt Earth Day Extravaganza!

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Yesterday Abt Electronics celebrated Earth Day in style!  For starters we had on display an electric car from Tesla motors.  With a sleek design, it is also extremely energy efficient.  Up to 245 miles per charge and goes 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds, this car releases no tailpipe emissions.

In addition to that, The Grove from Glenview Park District came out and showed our customers some of their popular reptiles like turtles and snakes.  Going over the importance of taking care of our environment to keep their ecosystems safe and healthy, all the kids were in awe.

To top it all off, our own in-house artist, Joe T.  spent the better half of the day painting a picture representing the earth and Abt Electronics’s efforts for the benefit of the environment.

It was another great exciting Earth day.  Visit Abt’s Green Efforts for more information on how Abt continues to try and make this planet a better place for everyone.

Earth Day Guest Blog From Tim S.

What type of Earth Day celebration would it be without discussing water??? It covers most of our planet, humans are made mostly of water, no living thing can survive without it, and most people spend more on it (per gallon) than on gas. Did you know bottled water costs anywhere from $7-$18 per gallon?

Here are some tips on reducing water usage and saving money in the process:

1 Buy a fridge that is Energy Star rated and has a filtered water dispenser. Get reusable bottles and stop paying for bottled water! On top of that, Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles per hour, that’s 21,900,000,000 plastic bottles a year. Not only will you save thousands of dollars per year, but you will create significantly less waste too.

2 Buy a front loading washing machine. They use, on average, half of the water a top loader uses and 68% less electricity. These units not only pay for themselves over time, but also clean your clothes better.

3 Purchase an energy star rated dishwasher. When the dishwasher is not full, either wait until it’s full, or use the half load option that many new dishwashers come equipped with.. Either way, you will conserve water.

4 Turn your water heater down. Water heaters come pre-set from the factory at about 140-150 degrees. That is hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns on a child in 3 seconds. If you turn your water heater down to 110 degrees, it’s not only safer, but you will significantly reduce the amount of energy your water heater is using.

Get out there and have a great Earth Day!!!

Earth Week at Abt

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Abt celebrated Earth Day on Sunday; it was quite a kick off to Earth Week.

We had so many Earth Friendly activities. Our Glenview neighbors at the Grove brought some cool snakes and turtles for everyone to get to know. Com Ed told us about their environmentally friendly programs. Dan from Garvy’s Office Supplies showed us all sorts of recycled office products. Abt gave tours of the recycling center and had Earth Day treats like granola and oatmeal raisin cookies. Kids who visited got to make sun catchers and mouse pads from recycled materials.

Abt’s goal is to make everyday Earth Day, according to Abt’s President Mike Abt. “Our goal is to have no waste, and we are close,” said Mike. “It’s a core value of the company and is demonstrated in everything we do.”

So on the heels of the Energy Star rebate program and Earth Day 2010, make sure you do your part to make this world a better place. Take a look at http://www.abt.com/green/ for information on how Abt works toward making a small carbon footprint.
