Smartphones are slowly becoming the go-to electronic for everything on-the-go. They have become everything from a cell phone, to a music player to a hand held video game console. What they also have become is the perfect instant camera. Smartphones are gaining ground as photo and video capture devices, said a study by The NPD Group. According to the NPD Group, 27 percent of all still and video images were captured on smartphones this year. This is up from 17 percent in 2010.
As smartphones continue to add to their features, their internal bits and pieces become more advanced. Most recently the iPhone 4s has an 8mp camera with incredible features that easily rival most major point-and-shoot digital cameras.
Being a new owner of an iPhone 4s, I no longer have to lug my camera on trips. Recently I made a trip to the Field Museum in Chicago, IL and I used my iPhone 4s all day for every camera shots. They all looked great, even in low light situations. My phone has become my main source for picture taking. It is fast, easy to use, allows for in-camera editing and I always have my phone on me, so I never miss a picture.
Do you use your cell phone to take images or video? Let us know!

Reverend John Cusick from Chicago’s Old St. Patrick’s Church (not to be confused with another Chicago icon: John Cusack) used his Sunday sermon to share his goal of spreading a few grins outside the church. Since this is the holiday season, many people will be visiting retail locations in search of the great present for that special someone. It was in Reverend Cusick’s sermon stated simply, “I will change the face of Retail America.”
His strategy is simple: He will not collect his purchases and step away from a checkstand until he makes direct eye contact with the cashier and elicited a smile. This is not always easy to do. The Reverend has even gone and made silly faces to charm out a smile.
Us here at Abt Electronics are pleased to hear his experience while shopping with us was a pleasant one. We at Abt genuinely try to everything possible to help the customer. When we do, not only does that make the company look good, but it also provides us with workplace satisfaction. A smile on us is a genuine smile and we do the same when we are customers outside of Abt.
This holiday season, try to do the same as Reverend Cusick. While shopping remember that someone behind the counter, on the floor, or checking you out may have long hours ahead. Finish up your transaction with a grin.
Josh Davis, a salesman here at Abt, visited Chicago’s WGN station this week to talk about some great gift ideas for Father’s day. Find out what’s hot and perfect that’ll surely please dad.

Described as the “largest single seamless digital image in the world,” 20 projectors inside the planetarium will be hooked up to 45 computers processing data for various images and should provide some incredible images of our universe, all in one convenient location.
The press release states, “The Grainger Sky Theater will project the largest single seamless digital image in the world with an ultra high definition screen resolution of more than 8k x 8k pixels. Abt’s ongoing green efforts are showcased on NBC Chicago’s article, “Is It Possible to Live Off the Electrical Grid?”. If you are a frequent visitor to our blog, you are well aware of our efforts to make this world a little greener. Most recently we installed a Windspire in the front of our store.
Every day our 350,000 plus square foot complex is powered from the hours of 9 am- 6 pm by two engines that run on natural gas. “If you were producing more power than you were using, your meter would actually spin backwards,” says Bob Taylor, our Director of Operations. Adding energy “back into the grid” is what happens when the system generates so much power.
If you are from the Chicagoland area and are interested at all in adding solar panels to your business or home, or even adding a Windspire to create your own energy, give us a call at 847-967-8830 . For full information on our efforts visit our Going Green page.
Sony has a fun, affordable docking station for your iPod or iPhone. Called the Sony TRik iPod dock, the unit works just as any docking station where you can plug in, charge and play your iPod. The interesting thing about this is that it comes with four interchangeable graphics allowing you to find your own unique style. If you don’t like the images the unit comes with, Sony works with the website skinit.com and you can choose from over a hundred of their custom images, or even upload one of your own from your computer.
The docking station plays your music through stereo sound quality speakers. The mids and highs come out crisp and clear. You can have a great listening experience in your room, your basement, or even in your backyard.
If you are looking for an affordable docking station, but want to add a little flair to your rooms, check this one out. I went ahead and even customized an image myself. Seeing as how I believe Chicago is the best city in the world, I think this image perfectly compliments my tastes.
If you have a sweet tooth, then hopefully you were in attendance this past Saturday when we crowned the winner of the Abt/Electrolux Bake Off Contest. The five finalists were on hand to wow the judges with their creations, and had some samples to hand out to other customers (if you didn’t get a chance to taste the recipes, you can always have one of our freshly, baked chocolate chip cookies that are available during the weekends). We had the opportunity to sample Andrea’s Peppermint Chocolate Cake, Bill’s Chicago “Cub” Cakes, Renee’s Sweet Tart Squares, Nancy’s Turtle Cheesecake Lollipops and Audrey’s Pistachio Chocochews.
After much deliberation, our three judges chose Bill’s Chicago “Cub” Cakes as the overall winner! I had a chance to interview Bill and was surprised that he created this recipe just for the contest. Another surprise was finding out that he and his wife purchased their first appliances in 1978 from Jewel Abt, one of the founders of this company, and they have been loyal Abt customers ever since. Bill won an Electrolux dream kitchen, valued up to $7,999. As an engineer, he appreciates that Electrolux creates is a “well engineered appliances.”
Congratulations Bill! We can’t wait to see what recipes next year’s contest will bring out!
Have you seen the Abt billboards popping up? Proudly, we have three in various locations. You may have spotted one in Chicago, right off of the Kennedy at Logan Boulevard. We also have one on I-90 just west of Wolf Road. One you may not have seen, a little farther away, is the billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
