New App Makes Using A GPS A Bit Safer

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Wikitude is a new app that allows users to reap the benefits of a GPS on their phone, while still keeping an eye on the road.  Ordinarily, when you glance to see what direction you are going, you take your eyes off the road.  With Wikitude, your cell phone’s camera is used to stream live video of the road ahead while keeping up-to-the minute with where to turn and when.

A really neat feature on Wikitude is that it can search surrounding areas for geo-referenced content using the camera and the device’s sensors. The objects’ information is displayed in the cam right where the real object is located.

Phone App May Help Keep Eye On You Car

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Viktor Lortz, a senior research scientist at chipmaker Intel’s research labs in Santa Clara, California, has been working on a project that connects the electronics inside a car to the Internet, so that mobile apps can provide a car owner with updates on his vehicle when the two are apart.

This means that an application for your phone will keep you aware of the safety of your car.  Intel researchers state that consumers, “can access data from the car and also send commands to it. The apps can be used for simple things, for example, opening the car door or starting the vehicle, as well as for more sophisticated tasks, like sending an alert and streaming video when the car’s motion sensors or alarm are triggered.”

All the processed information will be fed to the consumer via their phone and can be viewed immediately.  This a great step towards preventing auto theft as well as convenience for all drivers.

Attention App Creators!

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Panasonic has already lured some big names to its Viera Connect platform, such as MLB and Hulu, but now the company is opening up to smaller developers who want to see their creations developed for the big screen. Their program went live in January earlier this year, but now the company is providing an easy path from creation to release for its line of Panasonic Smart TVs. Panasonic will still maintain final control over what apps make it to the Viera market, but expect new games and streaming video sources to start popping up soon.

If you have an app already in the works or an idea for a killer app, check out their website for full details and instructions.

Abt's Mobile Electronics Installers Do It All

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Abt’s mobile audio department can turn your car into your own personal playground. John S., mobile electronics department manager called me today and said, “Do you want to come down and see an iPad that I just put in the dash of a car?”

I grabbed my camera and headed down to mobile electronics. I had an image in my head of what I thought it would look like, and admittedly, I wasn’t sure what the iPad would do, but I knew it would look cool.

When I got to the installation bay, I looked in the passenger door as John finished putting on the final touches and tested everything to make sure that the stereo and iPad worked correctly. I told him how cool it looked and then I stopped and said, but what does it do?

<

John explained that the iPad could control everything from the ignition, to the locks, to the security system on the Tahoe. He went on to show me it worked in conjunction with the Viper Smart Start App on his Blackberry.

In addition to controlling major systems in the car, it also performs all the functions of an iPad, like accessing iTunes and iPad Apps.

The iPad works off the wireless or 3G network, so if you want to use it as a GPS, radio, or streaming video player, go for it. You can do virtually anything with it.

Free Apple iPhone Applications

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I’ve had my iPhone for about a month now, and I really love it. I am pretty convinced that it can do anything I want it to do. I have actually found that I’ve used my laptop less because the iPhone is so handy.

Just about everyone at this point—iPhone user or not—has heard the slogan, “There’s an App for That.” It’s so true. There is an app for everything.

I found a really cool website at http://freeappaday.com/. The website is giving away a free iPhone app each day for a month. You may like them all or may only like a few… Either way, check it out and see if any of the free apps are appealing to you. There is a selector that will alert you if there is an app of the day that will interest you.

Let me know what you think!

For any iPhone accessories, stop in or check out www.Abt.com.
