Competition at the Viking Cooking School in Abt's Design Center

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Each year Kraft Foodservice and Grey Poupon sponsor a competition designed to inspire great chefs of tomorrow. The competition was last night at the Viking Cooking School in Abt’s design center.
Four students from top culinary schools will compete for $30,000 in scholarship money in this year’s live, Chefs of Grey Poupon Student Culinary Competition, judged by the Chefs of Grey Poupon. One of the four chefs is from Chicago’s own Kendall College.

As part of the competition, students received a “mystery” basket of ingredients, which they had to use in the dish they would prepare. Kraft Foodservice let Facebook posters choose the last ingredient included in the basket and black garlic won. Other “mystery” basket ingredients included Miracle Whip, Kraft BBQ Sauce, Pumpernickel Bread, and Planters Peanuts.

Last night Sonali Ruder from the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC prepared the winning dish. She won $20,000 in scholarship funds. Second place and $5,000 went to Joshua Ogrowdowski from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. Third place honors and $3,000 was awarded to Sarah Roberts from Kendall College, and fourth place and $2,000 was given to Brooke Maynard from The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.

Here Are A Few of Our Favorite Things

Monday, April 12th, 2010

The car audio department is hard working, but they know how to let loose too. Here are a few of their favorite products sold at Abt.

Aaron: “My favorite product is the Alpine’s INAW900. It is an in-dash am/fm/cd/DVD, and navigation unit. It’s a new product with lightning fast operation. I like the dual mode display, which is kind of like picture in picture. If you are listening to an iPod it can overlay a navigation screen in the bottom right corner and still give directions. It also supports the addition on the TUAT550HD radio tuner for crystal clear am/fm. Plus, it supports iTunes tagging, which allows you to “TAG” a song you hear on HD stations and then the next time you sync your ipod it will download those songs thru iTunes automatically. It also comes standard with an iPod adapter to connect your iPod.”

Gary: “I like Alpine Radio CDA117. It has a highly visible display, it’s easy to use, and it has a USB connection.”

Dustin: “Focal Speakers are my favorite product at Abt. The build quality and consistency is unmatched, so you know what you’re getting. They are versatile and fit into most vehicles. Their slogan is “The Spirit of Sound”. They have accomplished capturing their slogan’s meaning.”

Andrew: “My Favorite Car Audio products are the Focal KRX2 component speakers. They are the smoothest most accurate sounding speakers I have ever heard. They have excellent fidelity and control and will sound amazing at any volume level. They also have crossovers that can be adjusted to produce great sound in any car environment. Simply put, they are some of the best speakers Focal has to offer.”

Sarah: “My favorite Abt product is the Python 4102P. Abt will install and teach you how to use it. The unit and installation are affordable and it’s extremely convenient to use in the winter. It’s totally reliable and has a very good range. “

Jair: “Who doesn’t like fried food? I love the Cool Touch Deep Fryer, D895UX. It gives a professional result and it’s easy to use. I can make fish and chips that taste like they are from England.”

Mike: “I love the Pioneer Flagship In-Dash Navigation AV Receiver with DVD Playback (AVICZ110BT). It’s easy to use, has built in navigation and Bluetooth, and a touch screen.”

Franklin: “The Asus Eee 1201N Seashell Silver Netbook Computer (EPC1201NPU17SL) is light weight, can access the internet, and makes it easy to get in touch with my family and friends.”

Don: “I use the Escort 9500CI radar detector. It is fully built in, has a gps locator on the system to locate red light cameras and speed traps, and is updatable to get locations of new red light cameras and speed traps.”

Tim: “I love my Apple Mac Book (mc207lla). It’s easy to use, won’t get any viruses, and most schools use Mac’s so it’s easier to transport files to different computers.”

Jr: “My Weber Genesis LP Gas Grill is easy it use, easy to clean, cooks evenly, is built well and lasts a long time.”

Ryan: “The Mac Book Pro easy to use, super fast, virus free, and has the best music and video production software.”

The speakers make you feel as if you are in a theater watching the movie; it has an optional iPod connector. It’s easy to use and I control all of my electronics in one hub.”

John: “I don’t leave the house without my Apple iPod. It gives me the ability to carry around and all of my music and I don’t have to carry all my CDs with me. I can put video on it for my daughter and not have bring several DVDs with me in the car.”
