What Is the Internet of Things?

Thursday, July 20th, 2017

We’re all familiar with the Internet, which connects our computers, smartphones and tablets to others around the world—it’s how you’re reading this blog right now. But lately, you may have been hearing more about the Internet of Things, a concept that’s been steadily gaining buzz over the last few years. What is the Internet of Things? That’s what we’re here to learn today.

If the Internet connects computers to each other and you to those computers, the Internet of Things (IoT) connects, well, things. In the Internet of Things, everyday devices are upgraded with a computer chip that makes them smart and gives them internet connectivity, which lets them communicate with other smart objects and you, the user.  (more…)

8 Tips to Organize Your Door-in-Door Refrigerator

Friday, July 7th, 2017

If your door-in-door refrigerator could talk, what would it say? Would it complain about the various expired condiments hanging out on the top shelf? Maybe it would tell the tale of that green pepper that has been living in your veggie drawer for months. The truth of the matter is that most people struggle to keep their fridges organized. For some reason, it’s easier to throw food inside, shut the door, and forget about it. With the door-in-door feature on your fridge, though, you could be using that space to your advantage. Here are a few tips and tricks to help your fridge stay organized—whether it’s a side-by-side, French door, or door-in-door model.

How to Achieve the Look of a Counter-Depth Fridge Without Buying a New Unit

Wednesday, June 7th, 2017

A popular look in modern kitchens is the counter-depth fridge, which lines up the front of your refrigerator with the edge of your cabinets and countertops, providing a clean, flush look.

The front of a counter-depth fridge lines up almost evenly with the face of your cabinets.

If you’re planning on doing a kitchen remodel and are limited on space or budget (counter-depth fridges often cost more than normal-depth versions), or are just looking to find a way to make your existing full depth refrigerator appear more flush with your existing cabinets and countertops, there is another option. A great way to achieve that look without investing in a more expensive and smaller shallow depth unit is to simply recess the back wall that your refrigerator sits against. (more…)

Being Green: What Can You Do?

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Earlier this week, we talked about some of the technologies and practices that Abt has implemented in our business which help us be green on a day-to-day basis. And while it might not be feasible for individual homeowners to cover their roof in solar panels, there are still plenty of tactics that each of us can practice to help 2ease our impact on the environment. We’ve all heard of the 3 R’s of being environmentally-friendly: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These are some of the simplest ways we can work to better the environment, so here are some ways each of us can fit the 3 R’s into our daily lives.

Recycle

Most of us live in cities with municipal recycling programs. We take our cans, plastic bottles and paper products and drop them in a bin at the end of our driveway every week, and they’re hauled away and recycled, which keeps about 89 million tons of waste out of landfills. But it’s not always as easy to recycle other, larger items—your TV, cell phones, old light bulbs—which can be toxic to the earth.

In 2010, around 2.4 million tons of electronic waste was disposed of, with only 27% of it being properly recycled. Products that end up in landfills will eventually release hazardous substances like mercury, lead, and PCBs into the ground, which can contaminate our crops and water sources. In an era when we’re all constantly upgrading our gadgets, it’s increasingly important that our old devices get recycled properly. Thankfully, there are centers across the country that make it easy to drop off your old e-waste for safe recycling. Can’t make it out to Abt to recycle your old appliances, electronics, or other devices? Visit RecycleNation to search for your nearest recycling facility. Their recycling finder is also a great way to discover all of the other items you can recycle, including things you may never have thought of.

Picking the Perfect TV Wall Mount

Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

Picking up a new TV for the Big Game? One of the major considerations you’ll have to make after buying a new flat panel TV is whether you want to place it on a TV stand or hang it on your wall. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so there’s never one right answer. If you choose to wall mount, you’ll have one more decision to make: what type of wall mount to use. There are a few different types, so we’re here to help you decide what TV mount is the best for your needs.

The three main types of TV mount are: fixed, tilting, and fully-articulated.

A fixed TV mount keeps your TV snug against the wall and does not allow any fine position adjustment.

A fixed TV mount is the simplest type of TV mount, which makes it the most inexpensive. This type of mount holds your TV flush to the wall, and offers no adjustment. Fixed mounts are a fine choice if you’re able to hang your TV at eye level, know the audience will always be sitting in the same spot, and if you have total control over lighting in the room so you can avoid glares.  (more…)

Dishwasher Tips for Your Holiday Meal Cleanup

Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

For many of us, the Holiday season is a mixed bag of fun and stress. There’s the joyous celebrations with friends and family, the sights and sounds of the decorations, and all of the food. But then there’s also the stress of planning parties, the feeling of having one too many pieces of pie, and, finally, the dreaded cleanup. A party for a dozen or so people can create a mess that feels like it needs an army to clean. It’s important to clean smarter, not harder, so before you start loading up the dishwasher, read through these tips to ensure your dishes come out their cleanest with minimal work on your part.

1.) Do NOT pre-clean dishes before loading them.

It may seem like a good idea to clean dishes off before loading them, so the machine has less work to do, but that will actually make the dishes less likely to get cleaned. Dishwasher soap is specially formulated to attach to and attack foods left on your dishes. When you wash off all of that debris, the soap has nothing to attach to and simply gets rinsed off, so it doesn’t fully do its job. The best tactic is to remove only the large bits of food, and leave the sauces, grease, and other residue on the dish.

Taking the time to properly load your dishwasher will increase the likelihood that every dish gets thoroughly cleaned.

Even Cooking with Panasonic’s Inverter Technology

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

Panasonic microwave

Microwaves are convenient to have in your home, offering a quicker and easier way of preparing your food without taking up a lot of space or hurting your wallet. They make it easier to defrost frozen foods, reheat last night’s left overs, and even cook an entire meal. As the technology of microwaves continues to evolve, innovators are finding ways to ensure more consistent results and solve uneven cooking. The experts at Panasonic have come up with the intuitive design of Inverter Technology, which should eliminate the struggles of uneven cooking. Unlike most microwaves that depend on “pulse on, pulse off” cooking at low temperatures, the patented Inverter Technology creates a constant flow of power at all temperature settings, ensuring evenly cooked food at all times.

Nest And Alexa Team Up to Make Your Home Comfortable

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016

Nest Thermostat-Amazon Alexa

The Nest Learning Thermostat makes conserving energy easy and keeps costs low. This thermostat has the capability to learn what temperature you prefer and can also shut off when you are away. In independent studies, Nest saved an average of 10-12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills. That means it can pay for itself in under two years. The device is easy to use, it has Wi-Fi, so you can adjust the temperature to your liking by simply using your smartphone, tablet, or your Mac.

Now, adjusting the temperature in your home is easier by using your own voice, thanks to Nest and Amazon Alexa. Alexa is a cloud-based service that you can speak to through your Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, or Fire TV.  You can change the temperature on your Nest by stating a voice command such as “Alexa, set my living room thermostat to 68 degrees.” With this voice command feature, you can adjust the room temperature without having to lay a finger on your thermostat.
