BlackBerry’s PlayBook Now Works For the U.S. Government…Kind Of

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

BlackBerry’s tablet, the PlayBook has been officially christened by the U.S. Government as their go-to tablet for its federal employees.  What separates the PlayBook from other tablets is that the government has allowed BlackBerry to be  FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certified.  In short, the PlayBook is now certified to send and receive secure information between federal government employees during their daily meetings.

A release by BlackBerry after gaining Knighthood from the U.S. Government: “RIM is pleased to announce that the BlackBerry PlayBook is the first tablet approved under FIPS for use within the U.S. federal government,”…“This certification demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of security-conscious organizations and enables the U.S. federal government to buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information.”

Good luck PlayBook.  Hopefully you don’t get corrupted by politicians and stay true to your humble beginnings. Or, at least if you do go into politics, have a southern, folksy, charming demeanor like Pappy O’Daniel from “O Brother Where Art Thou?

“Where’s my BlackBerry PlayBook?”

Before There Were Air Conditioners

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Before the luxury of central air in homes, or even the convenience of portable air conditioners, there were various possible options on how to keep oneself cool during the hot summer nights.  From the outlandishly technological, to the simple air-cooling solutions, famous magazine Popular Science goes over various ways people used to beat the heat in the past.  Their online article entitled, “10 Old-Fashioned Ways to Beat the Heat” is a gallery of old inventions, some genius, some just plain silly, on how people kept cool.

When looking at these machines, it’s amazing to see how past generations felt cool. With just a few drops of temperature in their living rooms and homes, these machines could probably make an 85 degree room feel like 80 degrees.  Then again, I’ll never understand how past generations attended summer baseball games with women in full dresses and men in suits and fedoras.  Maybe we are just lucky to enjoy the advancement of technology that led us to cooler, clean air inside our homes.  If you are still suffering from the recent heat waves, we have exactly what you need to keep cool.  Check out our full line of air conditioners and stay cool this summer.

I bet hot dogs taste better when you wear a suit

Wireless Keyboards Offer Complete Control

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Recently I was bed ridden due to a minor procedure (don’t worry, I’m fine).  I found myself spending a lot of time watching television and putzing around on the internet.  Some of the best content I was watching was off my computer, thanks to the likes of  Netflix and Hulu.com.  I was able to pass a whole lot of time  and forget about the pain by catching up with  movies and TV shows.  One thing that was annoying was changing the sites, or TV shows by having to get up repeatedly and walk over to the computer.  I wanted to still enjoy my programming without having to move around. Pretty soon, I figured out the best solution: A wireless keyboard.

I picked up the Logitech MK320 and I couldn’t be happier.  I watched several episodes of Sons of Anarchy Season 3 as well as the movie,  True Grit, all without moving more than a few keyboard tapping muscles.  If you are looking for a great solution when combining your TV and computer, a wireless keyboard is an essential, convenient item for all your computing needs.

Com Ed and Abt: Working Overtime

Monday, July 25th, 2011

ComEd customer demand reached an all-time high peak usage milestone late Wednesday, with demand reaching 23,753 megawatts, exceeding the utility’s previous peak of 23,618 megawatts on Aug. 1, 2006.

With the increasing temperatures and wild storms, all of us here at Abt are putting in a little extra work too, and making sure our customers keep cool and their power stays on.  Our demand for air conditioners and generators have increased drastically the last week.  This extra work hasn’t slowed us down at all though.  “Sales are through the roof, trucks were making up to three pick ups a day”, said John Panchisin, Abt’s store manager.  Panchisin also added that his trucks have been picking up generators and AC units even in the middle of the night to keep up with demand.

If you are still looking for an A/C or need a generator to get your house back in working order, give us a  call at 888-228-5800 or shop our site.

“Talking Cars” Could Reduce Traffic, Accidents…Flying Cars Soon?

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Scientists from the University of Bologna in Italy have developed software that lets cars “communicate” with one another on the road.  Similar technology had been used before but this time, said the team, cars would be able to “know” what had happened (miles) ahead.  Tests suggest it could reduce traffic pile-ups by 40%.

It’s only a matter of time before we see flying cars like the movie “The Fifth Element“.  Unfortunately, there will probably still be traffic even when cars take to the skies.
