Is Cyber Monday the New Black Friday?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Black Friday, a flood of people entered the Abt showroom for our first early opening in history. Will Cyber Monday realize the same flurry of people on Abt.com and in our phone sales department?

Traditionally, Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year. In recent years, Cyber Monday has given Black Friday a run for its money. What will this year bring? Will Cyber Monday outshine Black Friday???

Stay Safe When Shopping On-Line

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

This holiday season, many people will be doing some, if not all of their shopping on-line. On-line shopping is a fast, easy way to get shopping finished without ever setting foot in a mall.

Stores like Abt.com are customer-friendly, and we take many necessary steps to insure that customer information is safe and protected. Many stores are the same way. Unfortunately, like a pick-pocket in a crowded shopping mall, there are scammers waiting to take advantage of you on-line too. Here a few tips to help you stay safe when shopping on-line this year.

Always use websites that have a little padlock located somewhere on the page. Make it mandatory that you only use websites that are secure. If you are unable to locate the padlock, look at the web address. If you see an “https” the website is secure. If you notice that the website only has “http” then I would navigate to another website that is secure.

Many stores require a log in and password. Try to avoid using the same password for all of the different websites you use. Try to make it something that has numbers and letters. Identity thieves could try to crack your password using familiar things to you, like a pet or child’s name.

Keep your computer protected. Wireless connections enable free movement of laptops and netbooks. If your computer is not protected, you could get a virus or someone could get access to your network—and information on that network.

Never respond to email from someone that you don’t know. Spam filters can sweep them into a junk mail folder before they even reach you. That’s another reason to have good security on your computer. Good computer security will have an email feature that blocks spam.

Another on-line shopping safety measure is dedicating credit card for use only when shopping on-line. If you only use one credit card for all of your purchases, if anything were to happen, you need not worry about cancelling all of your credit cards. Another benefit to using a credit card is that it’s not connected to your checking account. If a dispute for a charge is necessary, you won’t have any cash in limbo.

Where to go to find the perfect present? Abt Electronics!

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

It’s always my goal to give unique gifts during the holiday season. They don’t have to be the most expensive, just uber thoughtful. I spend hours on end trying to find the perfect gift ideas.

This year, I think it may be easier to buy for my friends who love their iPods. I was surfing the internet and found wooden (of all things) iPod speakers. We all have that hard-to-buy-for person on our lists. This year Abt might make it a little easier.

Abt.com has a ton of unique gift ideas for the hard-to-buy-for friend. Do you have a young cooking enthusiast on your list? Abt has cooking tools made just for a wee one. How about a nature-lover who is cutting down on his or her carbon footprint? We have solar powered iPod chargers. Still no ideas for that special someone—try Abt’s Gift Guide.

What Will You Buy on Black Friday?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Consumer Reports did a poll about the most wanted products this Black Friday. The poll showed that 70 percent of the 1,001 adults, who participated, planned to purchase consumer electronics, and 71 percent plans to buy clothing.

Almost surprising, more than half of the Black Friday shoppers polled will be purchasing an electronic for themselves. Not as surprising, approximately three-quarters of the same shoppers polled will be purchasing an electronic for someone else.

Of the electronics on shoppers lists, 22 percent intend to purchase an mp3 player or an iPod, 46 will buy a specific video game or accessory, 21 percent will get a video game console, 20 percent are looking for a laptop or netbook, and 13 percent are on the hunt for a TV.

Thinking of all of the crowded retail outlets, 53 percent of the polled consumers expected on-line retailers would have competitive bargains just like the crowded malls; while a shocking 28 percent of the 1,001 polled shoppers plan to physically visit a store. Thus proving, on-line shopping is quickly becoming a preferred method for shopping.

More than one out of every five adults plans to purchase a TV either Black Friday, during or after the holiday season. Out of those shoppers, over half are looking for a TV 40” or larger. HD or a better picture, size, specific programming needs, adding additional TVs to the household, and desire for a flat-panel TV are the main reasons for TV purchases this season.

Is This the New Blackberry Pearl?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

The Blackberry Pearl 8100  is due for an update and it’s coming soon. I don’t have specifications for the new phone, but I do know the trackball will be replaced with a touch pad. The new model will also have a Sure Type keyboard, just like its predecessor. Possibly the best feature of the long-awaited new Pearl is its faster 3G status. Will the new battery design impact the phone? I guess we have to wait until its release.

Will the new Pearl be on your holiday wish list?

California… Trend setting?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Has energy efficiency become a nationwide trend? That seems to be the case. Every time I open the newspaper, go to a store and see all of the reusable bags, or read an article on the web, I see different agencies, consumers, and companies making green efforts.

Wednesday, California adopted new energy-efficiency rules for TVs smaller than 58 inches. Accounting for around 10% of the energy consumed in average homes, California was afraid that new LCD and Plasma TVs would use even more energy. California’s consumers purchase and own approximately four million of the almost 36 million TVs that have been shipped this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

California’s new energy standard for TVs should cut energy consumption by 33% in the year 2011 and 50% in 2013. The California Energy Commission (CEC) said its actions should help the state save enough energy to power 864,000 single-family homes over 10 years. The commission also believes that the measures will save state consumers more than $8 billion over 10 years, which works out to nearly $20 a year per television in savings.

DVDs for Blu-rays?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

If you could trade in your DVDs for movies in Blu-ray format, would you? Warner Bros. is betting that you will. This holiday season Warner Bros. has implemented a program allowing owners to trade in all of their Warner Bros. DVDs to exchange them for the same movie in Blu-ray format.

Warner Bros. created a website to get your Blu-ray collection jump-started. If you visit www.DVD2blu.com, you can get instructions for your DVD trade-in. Simply send in your DVD and a small fee, and then a few days later get the same movie sent back to you in Blu-ray format.

With over 50 titles to choose from currently, you may select up to 25 to trade-in per visit. The cost of the trade-in varies per movie from $7.95 to $9.95 depending on the title. The available movies range from family titles to action movies. Warner Bros. will constantly add titles to the collection, so check their website regularly.

Are you interested in any Blu-ray titles on their list?
