Dollars for Dishwashers???

Friday, August 28th, 2009

“Cash for Appliances” is the latest Federal stimulus program. Similar to the “Cash for Clunkers” program, the government is hoping to stimulate the economy and help consumers save money in the long run with Energy Star appliances.

According to an article in today’s Wall Street Journal (where Abt’s showroom was featured), each state will individually determine how much of a $50 to $200 rebate will be offered for specific energy-saving appliances.

Abt’s General Manager, Mark Cook, spoke with both ABC and NBC’s local news stations about the latest incentive program on August 26, 2009.

Abt is currently offering great deals on Energy Star Appliances, contact any Abt appliance specialist for details. Click Here

Missing You Might Be Easier With ASUS

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Although I’ve never sent a kid to college, I imagine that it’s a daunting task. Missing that child has got to be unbearable. Or, what if a loved one has to move, or even travel a lot? Connecting with that person face-to-face would be a great comfort. ASUS Videophone for Skype might just be an answer to the question, how can I make missing my friends and family easier, when they are so far away?

Not everyone can afford a laptop or computer with a webcam. Sometimes they aren’t portable enough. ASUS has reintroduced a 10”, 3.5 pound videophone for Skype that is portable enough to bring just about anywhere. This videophone can be used to make Skype-to-Skype calls, calls to landlines, and calls to cell phones. Even if you are not currently a Skype user, it’s free and easy to sign up for an account.

The ASUS is impressive for such a futuristic device. Once the initial set-up is complete, it’s pretty much dial and you’re good to go. After reading reviews on the videophone, most users have noted that it is far easier to use than a webcam—making it a great gift idea for grandparents and grandchildren too. Abt Electronics is a proud retailer for the ASUS Videophone for Skype.

Portability is a benefit of the ASUS Videophone compared to that of computer webcams. Resolution of the screen is 800 x 480 Pixel, on a 7” touch screen. It also boasts a great frame rate. The videophone can easily be packed or locked in a hotel safe. Take the ASUS with you for a video chat of up to 20 minutes, or talk as long as you want when it’s in the hinged base.

Kids Ruled the Day at Abt

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Sunday, August 23, 2009 Abt Electronics hosted our 6th Kids Day, and what a success it was! The turn out was amazing. We scheduled the event from 12-4 with crafts and goodies planned for all who attended. According to Cari Boyk, the Customer Service Manager the event drew over 160 kids from all over the area. She said we ran out of goodie bags by 3:30. For the next event we can only plan to have more on hand! Kids enjoyed drawing, crafting, and snacking with employees from the Glenview library and Abt.

Event participants even got the chance to enjoy some of our kid-sized leather recliners when they wanted to sit back and enjoy some of the books on hand. If you missed Kids Day this time… Don’t worry, there’s always next year. It will be better than ever!

Abt Has Something To Celebrate!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Abt Electronics is proud to be acknowledged on the 2009 Inc. 5000 List of the fastest growing private companies in America! It’s an honor to be recognized for all of the hard work put into building a company that now has a place on the same list where companies like Microsoft, Under Armour, and Oracle once appeared.

Who would have thought, in 1936, when Abt was founded that it would one day have over 1,000 employees when it started with just three? What an accomplishment! To celebrate, Abt will be recognized at the 28th Annual Inc. 500|5000 Conference and Awards Ceremony held September 23-25, 2009 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Abt is providing what customers need—even in the struggling economy our customers keep coming back for our quality products, outstanding customer service, and post-sales service. Abt exceeds the expectations of its customers making it possible to compete with the other industry giants.

A World of Butterflies Await

Friday, August 14th, 2009

One of the store’s main attractions is nestled away in the Apple boutique, where a world of butterflies awaits your visit. The world of butterflies allows you to interact with our colorful winged friends in a way not possible in the real world. A bit excited upon your arrival, the butterflies will take flight. However, within a matter of seconds, these little creatures will quickly befriend you. By simply entering their virtual world, your shadow casts a spot for the butterflies to land. And yes, they will land, but only to catch their breath before they take flight again.

Inspired by the Big Backyard exhibit at the Chicago Children’s Museum, founder and chief artist Zach Booth Simpson of Min Control designed the world of butterflies for Abt Electronics in the early months of 2004. Since its arrival many people, both young and old, have befriended the butterflies and make it a point to visit them as much as possible. “This is truly an epic encounter, bringing the outside world indoors!” said Tim B., an Abt customer. Abt’s Back to School Products are Head of Their Class

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Abt found the coolest products to get any student ready for the school year.

The Garmin Nuvi 205 GPS will get you back to school—without too many detours. It’s great for college because of its anti-theft feature, battery life, and touch-screen capabilities.

“Computer sales are up in the store right now because they are becoming more affordable and students need them for college. Now is the perfect time to buy a laptop,” according to Winnie in the Sony Store.

A new laptop is a fun way to start a school year. Abt carries a variety of portable computers ranging from Apple to Sony. Perfect for a college student, the Asus laptop is affordable and comes preconfigured with the Windows operating system—ready to go right out of the box! We also carry stylish and functional laptop bags. When I asked David, from small electronics, what is the most popular back to school electronic, he responded, “Laptops. Macs and Sonys. We have the absolute essentials for back to school college students, like laptops, mini-fridges, and small electronics. I just quoted a price on a Sony laptop for a first-time student going to Dayton.”

Abt put some thought into making college eating healthier. We found some small appliances for dorms and apartments that will make cooking easy—even for a busy college student. Cuisinart makes a line of easy-to-use appliances like egg cookers, sandwich makers, and slow cookers that will keep any student well-fed. Looking for a healthy option? The Breville HealthSmart Food Steamer is a must buy. Waring makes a professional waffle maker—a personal favorite. Don’t forget to check out an Avanti, under the counter refrigerator—a perfect place to chill leftovers so they don’t end up looking like a science experiment.

A messy dorm is easy to find on any campus. Electrolux makes a 2-In-1 lightweight upright vacuum, perfect for a dorm or apartment. Having an easy-to-use vacuum around should be the motivation needed to keep any study space clean. Did you know that GE made a portable dishwasher?

College isn’t all about class, studying, and eating. Check out the LG 32″ LCD flat panel HDTV, the Nintendo Wii, and the Samsung 5.1-channel home theater system.

Capturing college memories is a must! Canon Power shot is a great camera, small enough for pockets and most purses—definitely backpacks.

Abt is the first place students (or their parents) need to stop before heading back to school. Preparation is the key to success and we will take care of all a students needs. To see all the great back to school gadgets, click here. – Kelly B.

Abt's Making News at the WGN Back to School Kids Fair

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

It wasn’t a typical day at the WGN studios, in Chicago, on Friday. Rather, it was all fun and games for the Back to School Kids Fair. Abt’s own, Josh Davis, was in attendance to join in on the fun and showcase the Wii Sports Resort on one of our beautiful Sony TVs. He had a blast with all of the kids showing them all of the great back to school electronics that we were invited to bring to the fair. It wasn’t just Josh that got excited about the Abt tent at the fair, all of the students were excited to have to the chance to have hands-on time to play and experiment with all of the great electronics and gadgets that Abt was invited to exhibit. Josh also handed out Abt Electronics stress balls for those long nights filled with endless studying and homework. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the school year than to hang out with a bunch of great kids and play with a bunch of fun electronics—what a great way to end the summer! -Kelly B.

One Fish, Two Fish, Three Fish, Abt Fish

Friday, August 7th, 2009

What do you get when you take an 8,000 pound tank, 60,000 pounds of water, a few Moray Eels, a 2.5 foot Leopard Shark, accompanied with other fish and put them all together? The answer – the Salt Water Aquarium at Abt Electronics and Appliances! One of the many store attractions, the 20 foot long, 8 feet deep aquarium has served as the home to a variety of sea water fish over the past seven years. Over 100 fish occupy the salt water aquarium. Their meals are a combination of meat and plant life, giving the fish a balance of nutrients needed for proper growth.

Keeping up with the fish is no easy task. For starters, the tank is cleaned twice a week by a diver in a wetsuit who uses brushes and high pressure water sprayers to clean the acrylic and the coral. The strore has designated a room for filtration purposes where the water is run through both a mechanical and biological system. Once the water has been oxygenated, it is processed through a protein skimmer, and then filtered back into the tank.

“The aquarium is a big attraction especially for the children. Not only is it exciting to see all the fish, it is also very educational as we provide a brief description of the fish in the tank” – Paul Chiappetta, Sales Associate.

Feel free to stop by and visit our underwater friends the next time you’re in the area. We’d love to see you! For more information about the Abt aquarium, click here. For more information regarding Abt attractions, click here. – Maral A.

The Comeback Kids

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

After a disappointing start to the season, the Abt Co-Ed Softball team finally did what they do best, WIN. The team that consisted of 18 men and women took first place in the recent Glenview Co-Ed softball tournament. This is an amazing accomplishment considering they started the season 0-5. After a few additions to the roster, the team started to win every game. Co-Ed softball works a little differently than a normal softball game. Girls must occupy the positions of first base, third base, and center field. Girls must also bat every other player. Because of these rules, there had to be an equal number of both guys and girls on the roster.

The variety in the roster showed the versatility in the Abt employees. The roster consisted of 11 customer service members, 2 drivers, 2 service employees, and even one accountant. The captain of the team was from our routing department and our team was managed by the customer service manager. It was a great way for people from all departments to get together every week and partake in a common interest. Throughout the season, everyone’s main goal was to have fun, and winning came second. Some games were tough to watch, but the constant humor kept everyone going. A game was never complete until the captain, Dave Reis, got dirt on his pants. Sometimes, he would even fall on purpose (or so he said) to get messy. This is the second year in a row the co-ed team took the first place trophy. We can’t wait to see what next year brings. – Megan B.
